Agreement reached to 'eliminate' Phu Quoc night market.

The contract for organizing the Bach Dang pedestrian street and night market in Phu Quoc has expired. Authorities are now planning how to handle the assets, reorganize urban order, and hand over the market space.

The Department of Economy , Infrastructure and Urban Development of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang province, recently held a meeting with relevant units and Sea Star Tourism Joint Stock Company to agree on a plan for handling assets and reclaiming the land for the Bach Dang pedestrian street and night market (Phu Quoc night market) after the lease contract expires.

The pedestrian zone and night market in Phu Quoc will be dismantled and the land returned after the lease expires.

At the meeting, the parties compiled and categorized assets owned by the state, enterprises, and small traders, and developed a plan for relocation and handover of the premises in accordance with regulations.

The company representative stated that they will work directly with each small business owner to reclaim the premises, and in cases of non-compliance, they will request the relevant authorities to coordinate and take action.

Regarding the asset management plan after the handover, the Finance and Planning Department proposes that infrastructure items be managed by the Department of Economy, Infrastructure and Urban Development, while other assets will be taken over by the finance agency.

The fire department requires that all power be cut off before dismantling any structures, and that equipment and personnel be deployed to supervise and ensure fire safety. Meanwhile, the electricity management unit stated that they have discovered several cases of illegal power connections and have issued reports requesting corrective action.

The urban order inspection team recommends that the lead agency promptly report to the People's Committee of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone to receive specific guidance on the implementation plan, budget, and assignment of responsibilities among the units.

The Head of the Department of Economy, Infrastructure and Urban Development requested businesses to urgently complete the inventory and handover of all assets as required. Functional forces are strengthening inspections and supervision, promptly addressing violations of urban order, electrical safety, and fire prevention and control in the Bach Dang pedestrian street and night market area. This includes focusing on resolving encroachment on sidewalks and roads, and the risks of electrical hazards and fires posed by small traders and residents living nearby.

As Tien Phong newspaper reported, in September 2015, the Economic Department of Phu Quoc district (now the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Department of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone) signed a contract with Sea Star Tourism Joint Stock Company to lease land for organizing the Bach Dang pedestrian street and night market for a period of 10 years, ending on December 31, 2025.

On December 23, 2025, this agency issued a notice requiring the business to pay its outstanding debts for the last six months of 2025 and hand over the entire leased land area in its current condition upon contract expiration.
