Instagram head Adam Mosseri has announced that his platform Threads has surpassed 400 million monthly active users (MAUs), just two years after Threads launched as a competitor to Twitter (now X).

“As of a few weeks ago, there were more than 400 million monthly active users on Threads.

“The past two years have been a roller coaster. What started as a quirky idea to compete with Twitter has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters open discussion of diverse perspectives,” Mosseri wrote.

According to TechCrunch , the new milestone means Threads added 50 million users in just one quarter. In April, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the platform had reached more than 350 million monthly active users.

Despite its surge in users, Threads still isn't as popular as X. Former CEO Linda Yaccarino said in April that the platform had more than 600 million monthly active users.

According to Similarweb , Threads’ daily active users are catching up to X. As of June, Threads’ mobile apps on Android and iOS had 115.1 million daily active users, up 127.8% year-over-year. By comparison, X’s mobile daily active users were 132 million during the same period, down 15.2% year-over-year.

Still, X's daily desktop unique visitors far outpaced Threads', with 145.8 million worldwide in June, compared to Threads' 6.9 million.

Threads' growth phase came after the platform added many features such as direct messaging (DM), decentralized interactions (fediverse), feed customization, AI improvements... However, the situation of clickbait content and lack of control is still a big problem on the platform.
