Diversity
"Each season has its own flowers" is the simplest way to describe the diversity of imported flowers on the market. Spring brings snowdrops, willow branches, and tulips; summer offers varieties of roses like plume, bevery, and egg-shaped roses; autumn features chrysanthemums like tanda, peonies, and pico; and winter brings orchids, magnolias, and azaleas.
Some flowers are imported, but many foreign varieties are also grown in certain provinces and cities, resulting in lower prices.
The owner of a flower shop on Hoang Quoc Viet Street, Tu Minh Ward (Hai Duong City), who sells many types of imported flowers such as roses and snowdrops, said that the prices of these flowers are not high, ranging from 120,000 to 300,000 VND per bunch depending on the type, and are chosen by many people.
During the recent Lunar New Year, imported tulips were very popular due to their diverse colors, long blooming period of 7-10 days, ease of arrangement and care, and a price of only 200,000-250,000 VND per 10 flowers.
"Depending on the season, we import whatever flower varieties the nurseries have available. I also prioritize importing exotic and rare flowers to sell to flower enthusiasts. Many nurseries have successfully grown imported flower varieties, so the prices are much lower than importing flowers from abroad, making them more accessible to flower lovers," said Ms. Vu Thi Lan, the owner of the shop.
During the recent Tet holiday, reporters from Hai Duong newspaper observed many flower vendors in Hai Duong City offering a variety of new and imported flowers that were popular. The most common was the snow plum blossom, with each bunch containing 8-10 branches measuring 1.2-1.5 meters in length. When soaked in enough water, the branches would burst into tiny, pure white blossoms. This year, snow plum blossoms were reasonably priced, ranging from 60,000 to 100,000 VND per bunch depending on the variety. These flowers last a long time, from 15 to 20 days. To ensure the flowers bloom beautifully at the right time, growers must use them for nourishment, spraying the tips of the branches with water daily to encourage blooming.
“This year, many people are buying snowdrop flowers to decorate their homes. In previous years, not many snowdrop flowers were imported, so the price was quite high, around 120,000 – 150,000 VND per bunch. This year, there are more available, so the price is cheaper, and people have more choices,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Men, a flower seller at Dong Ngo Quyen Market (Hai Duong City).
Many ways to play

Previously, imported roses sold for 30,000-50,000 VND per stem, and even those willing to spend only dared to arrange 5-7 stems, often mixed with other flowers. Now, the price is not as high, so imported roses are no longer as exclusive as before. The clientele for imported roses is also more diverse.
During the recent Lunar New Year, varieties of roses like plume and bevery were priced at only 120,000 - 150,000 VND per 50 stems, while tulips ranged from 200,000 - 250,000 VND per 10 stems, depending on color and number of petals.
Ms. Nguyen Hong Luu, residing in the Ecoriver urban area (Hai Duong City), is a flower lover and frequently buys flowers to arrange. “The flower market is quite diverse these days. Depending on my preferences and the season, I choose the right flowers to arrange. Having a few vases of flowers to beautify my home isn't as expensive as it used to be, making it suitable for many families,” Ms. Luu shared.
Besides buying flowers, many people also buy seeds of imported flower varieties to grow themselves for Tet (Lunar New Year). Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, residing on Pham Ngoc Khanh Street, Hai Tan Ward (Hai Duong City), was introduced by a friend to the method of growing and caring for tulip bulbs for Tet. Before Tet, Ms. Thao asked her friend to buy her 10 red tulip bulbs. After buying the bulbs, Ms. Thao planted them in small pots, watered them 2-3 times a week, and placed the pots in a well-lit and airy location. After 25-30 days, the plants bloomed.
"To have flowers to enjoy during Tet (Vietnamese New Year), I had to buy tulip bulbs and plant them in December. Right on Tet, the whole pot of flowers bloomed beautifully, giving me a feeling of good fortune in the new year. Although they are imported flowers, planting and caring for them isn't complicated, so they're perfect for busy people like me," Thao happily recounted.
Despite being imported varieties, thanks to advancements in cultivation and care techniques by local nurseries, and changes in consumer preferences for flowers, the market for imported flowers is becoming increasingly vibrant and affordable for consumers.
