Mali's state television channel ORTM broadcast a statement from the President's Office stating: "The duties of the Prime Minister and members of the government have ended."
On November 19, protesters in the capital Bamako and many other cities across the country called for Maiga's resignation. He was appointed Prime Minister of Mali in June 2021.
On November 17, Mr. Maiga called on the country's military leaders to discuss ending the "transition" period, emphasizing that this process, which was supposed to end on March 26, 2024, as promised, had been postponed without debate within the government.
According to him, this is creating serious challenges, and he called for unity as well as "respect for the government, ensuring its strength and stability."
Since 2012, Mali has been mired in a political and security crisis, due to attacks by jihadist groups and other armed groups, as well as clashes between the army and separatist forces in the north of the country.
The military in this West African nation began seizing power following a series of coups in 2020 and 2021.
In June 2022, the government pledged to hold elections and transfer power to civilians before the end of March 2024, but subsequently postponed the voting indefinitely.
