Early this morning (March 11th), Tottenham visited Atletico Madrid's stadium for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. In this match, Spurs were trailing 0-4 after just 22 minutes, following goals from Llorente, Griezmann, Alvarez, and Le Normand for Atletico.
After conceding goals in quick succession within 16 minutes (from the 6th to the 22nd minute), Spurs pulled one back in the 26th minute thanks to a goal from Porro.
In the second half, Tottenham conceded a fifth goal in the 55th minute through Alvarez, who completed his brace in the match. Going all-out after being 1-5 down, Spurs added another goal in the 76th minute through Solanke, ultimately losing 2-5.
Having suffered a heavy defeat against Atletico Madrid in the first leg, Spurs face a high risk of being eliminated from the Champions League, even though they still have the second leg at home on March 19th.
Moreover, this defeat also means Tottenham Hotspur have suffered six consecutive losses in all competitions since their 2-2 draw against Man City on February 1st in the Premier League.
Of Spurs' last six defeats, four were consecutive losses under new manager Igor Tudor. According to Opta statistics, this is the first time in Tottenham's history that they have lost six consecutive matches in all competitions.
Thus, Spurs have set two unwanted records in the past week. Before suffering a run of six consecutive defeats in all competitions, Tottenham set a dismal record by going 11 consecutive Premier League games without a win for the first time after losing to Crystal Palace in round 29 on March 6th (7 losses, 4 draws).
It's not out of the question that Spurs will extend this poor run of form in the 30th round of the Premier League on March 15th when they visit Liverpool. If they slip up in the upcoming match, Igor Tudor's team could fall into the relegation zone, as they are only one point above the bottom three (29 compared to 28).
