Promoting circular agriculture

Taking advantage of abundant agricultural by-products, many businesses, cooperatives, and farming households have recently boosted the production of organic fertilizers. This is an important solution to minimize environmental pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to realizing the goal of developing a sustainable circular agriculture.

Producing organic fertilizer from straw at Hoa Long Agricultural Service Cooperative (Hoa Long commune, Dong Thap province).

Leading us on a tour of the organic fertilizer production facility, Le Long Ho, Director of Hoa Long Agricultural Service Cooperative (Hoa Long commune, Dong Thap province), shared that since 2023, recognizing the abundant supply of agricultural by-products, the cooperative has begun researching and utilizing straw, especially waste straw from mushroom farms, to produce organic fertilizer.

On average, the cooperative uses about 1,000 tons of straw as raw material each month. Of that, we prioritize using waste straw from mushroom farms to optimize time and cost. If we compost fresh straw directly from the fields, the process to produce the finished product takes up to six months.

Meanwhile, straw from mushroom growing substrates has undergone natural composting, shortening the production cycle to just four months. According to Mr. Ho, the production process is carried out systematically. After harvesting, the straw is mixed with earthworm compost and composted for about 20 days. Once it reaches the necessary level of decomposition, the mixture is dried to achieve the standard moisture content, then put into a grinding system and packaged as a finished product.

Currently, market demand is very high. Each month, the cooperative supplies approximately 300 tons of organic fertilizer to the market. Besides Dong Thap, the cooperative's organic fertilizer products are also distributed in many other provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region.

According to Phung Ha, Chairman of the Vietnam Fertilizer Association, utilizing these by-products to produce fertilizers is a core link in circular agriculture. This solution not only optimizes economic efficiency, reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, but also helps restore soil health, reduces dependence on imported fertilizers, and contributes to increasing the commercial value of Vietnamese agricultural products.

The production of organic fertilizers in Vietnam has seen positive changes in recent years. According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), by the end of 2025, the country will have over 29,000 fertilizer products. Of these, organic fertilizers (including bio-fertilizers) will account for over 30%, a significant increase from 13.1% in 2019. Of approximately 800 fertilizer factories, 136 specialize in producing organic fertilizers. The total production capacity of organic fertilizers currently reaches 5 million tons per year, accounting for 23.8% of the total industry capacity.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has set a target to increase the proportion of organic fertilizers permitted for circulation to over 30% of the total number of fertilizer products by 2030. The amount of industrially produced organic fertilizers will account for at least 30% of the total amount of fertilizers used in agricultural production. The amount of organic fertilizers produced on a household scale and used in agricultural production will reach at least 20 million tons/year…

According to Phung Ha, Chairman of the Vietnam Fertilizer Association, in the coming time, relevant authorities need to continue creating favorable conditions for the registration and approval of organic fertilizer products. At the same time, they should develop and diversify products, especially high-quality fertilizers. They should encourage the development, production, and use of organic fertilizers on a household scale, based on utilizing by-products from farming, livestock raising, agricultural processing, and household waste.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment stated that it will prioritize and support new registrations and renewals of registrations for organic fertilizer factories and production facilities, especially those applying advanced production processes and technologies. Simultaneously, it will support and encourage investment in research and development of high-quality organic fertilizers, including those containing new beneficial microorganisms that are fast-acting, efficient, stabilize soil fertility, easy to use, and utilize readily available domestic materials. Furthermore, it will promote the transfer of modern organic fertilizer production technologies from around the world to Vietnamese organic fertilizer manufacturers.
