The birthplace of the King of Comedy star is in Haishu District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province (China). His father was Zhou Yishang, a member of the local Zhou family in Ningbo. This family has maintained the Zhou surname for many generations, with no records indicating they ever changed their surname or concealed their identity.
Stephen Chow's true family background has been revealed.
According to family history, Stephen Chow's ancestors moved from Ningbo to Shanghai before settling in Hong Kong to make a living. They were an ordinary working-class family with modest economic conditions. There is no mention in family history or tradition of any ancestors being members of the Ming dynasty or bearing the surname Zhu.

Stephen Chow's true identity has unexpectedly come under scrutiny following rumors that he is a descendant of the Ming dynasty.

Stephen Chow himself has always acknowledged his Ningbo origins. He has served as a tourism ambassador for the city and has returned to his hometown many times to learn about his family roots.
The research teams involved also compared numerous ancient documents preserved at the Tianyi Pavilion Library in Ningbo, including genealogies and historically valuable ancient books. The results showed that there was no record of Stephen Chow's ancestors changing their surname from Chu to Zhou to avoid misfortune.
The reason this rumor spread so widely is because many social media accounts combined real historical events with subjective speculation to create a compelling story.
During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, some members of the Zhu imperial family did indeed change their surnames to avoid purges. Historically, a branch of the Ming imperial family in Ningxiang County, Hunan Province (China) is recorded as having changed their surname from Zhu to Zhou to preserve their identity. This is a real event. However, it is important to note that this case only occurred in Hunan Province and was not related to Ningbo, Zhejiang.
During the same period, the Zhou clans in Ningbo continued to exist and maintain their original surnames relatively stably. There is no evidence to suggest that a large-scale surname change occurred there to avoid future repercussions. Attributing an event that occurred in Hunan to the Zhou clan in Ningbo is an unfounded inference.

Stephen Chow's reputation is built on his acting talent, creative thinking, and contributions to cinema, rather than on fabricated stories about his background circulating on social media.

To add credibility to the rumors, many people even offered subjective arguments. Some suggested that Stephen Chow's premature graying hair or quiet personality were characteristic signs of his royal lineage from the Zhu family. Some even analyzed Stephen Chow's famous films like *A Chinese Odyssey * or *Kung Fu Hustle* and argued that these were allegories for the downfall of the Ming dynasty.
However, these arguments are completely unfounded scientifically or historically. Premature graying of hair is a common genetic phenomenon, and Stephen Chow's films are purely works of art. Throughout his career, he has never mentioned or implied that he is a descendant of royalty.
As rumors continued to spread, new versions emerged with increasingly sensational details such as "Stephen Chow's DNA test matches that of the Ming imperial family," "secret family tree reveals his lineage," or "royal blood passed down through generations."
However, there are no archaeological documents, scientific studies, or family records to confirm this information. Much of it originates from spontaneous content on social media aimed at attracting views and interaction.
