Zinchenko faced another nightmare when he suffered a knee injury on his home debut for Ajax. |
The Ukrainian defender moved to Ajax earlier this month after ending his loan spell at Nottingham Forest. The deal reportedly included a significant pay cut, as Zinchenko's biggest goal was to play regularly to maintain his chances of being called up to the national team.
On the evening of February 15th, he made his debut at the Johan Cruyff Arena in a match against Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie. However, his debut lasted just over two and a half minutes. After a collision with Dimitrios Limnios, Zinchenko fell to the ground clutching his left knee in pain. He was unable to continue playing and had to be assisted off the field by the medical team.
Images of the 29-year-old defender lying on the ground have caused concern among fans. On social media, many have expressed worries about the possibility of him suffering a cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, a type of injury that can sideline players for extended periods. However, the exact extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed.
Despite the incident involving their new signing, Ajax still won 4-1 against Fortuna Sittard thanks to goals from Jorthy Mokio, Rayane Bounida, and a brace from Mike Godts.

Zinchenko once played for Arsenal. |
After the match, coach Fred Grim spoke cautiously about Zinchenko's situation: "At the moment, we don't know how serious the injury is. He will have an MRI tomorrow or the day after. Hopefully, everything is not too bad."
If the knee injury is as serious as initially feared, Zinchenko could be sidelined for a long period. This would not only affect Ajax's plans but also threaten the 1996-born player's chances of participating in the World Cup.
The results of medical tests in the coming days will determine whether this was just an unfortunate incident during his debut match, or a rocky start to Zinchenko's new journey in Amsterdam.
