This week, oil prices continued their upward trend, with Brent crude rising $2.34 to $76.51 per barrel and WTI crude increasing $3.36 to $73.96 per barrel.
The transitional week between the old year and the new year 2024-2025 witnessed a dramatic "sprint" in oil prices. The last two trading sessions of 2024 saw significant acceleration. Specifically, on December 30, 2024, oil prices edged up slightly as investors anticipated lower temperatures in the US and Europe would boost diesel demand. Then, in the final session of the year, oil prices rose by approximately 1% following US airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, raising concerns about geopolitical instability.
Despite a surge towards the end of the year, oil prices closed 2024 with a second consecutive year of declines. Specifically, Brent crude fell by about 3%, while WTI crude remained almost unchanged.
Entering 2025, oil prices experienced a "stagnant" session on January 1st due to market closures. However, the upward trend continued strongly in the first trading session of the new year (January 2nd). Oil prices surged by more than $1, supported by optimistic factors regarding the Chinese economy following President Xi Jinping's commitment to boosting growth, along with data showing a 1.2 million barrel decrease in US crude oil inventories. Nevertheless, the gains were somewhat limited by news of a sharp increase in US gasoline and distillate product inventories.
At the end of the week, Brent crude rose a total of $2.34 to $76.51 per barrel, and WTI crude increased by $3.36 to $73.96 per barrel. Thus, oil prices experienced their first consecutive week of gains in 2025, extending their upward trend to a second consecutive week.
