White sweet potatoes are priced between 10,000 and 12,000 VND per kilogram.

This year, Doi Cao village planted nearly 30 hectares of sweet potatoes, with some households renting additional land to expand their sweet potato cultivation area. As one of the households with many years of experience in sweet potato farming, Mr. Tuan believes that sweet potatoes are easy to care for and are resistant to pests and diseases. From planting to harvesting takes more than four months. The care process only requires sufficient fertilization and one weeding before harvesting the tubers.

The sweet potato variety, "white inside, yellow outside," is well-suited to the local soil and climate, giving it the distinctive "Thanh An sweet potato" characteristic. With a yield of 12-14 tons per hectare and a selling price ranging from 10,000 to 12,000 VND per kilogram, sometimes reaching 15,000 VND per kilogram during peak periods, each hectare of sweet potatoes generates over 100 million VND in income, offering 2-3 times the economic efficiency compared to other crops.

Mr. Lo Van Chinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh An commune ( Dien Bien district), said: To date, the commune has planned over 52 hectares for sweet potato cultivation. Although not yet recognized as a key crop, sweet potatoes are currently considered a strong crop for Thanh An commune, alongside livestock farming and rice cultivation.

Durian prices are nearly reaching 200,000 VND/kg.

As of November 8th, durian prices in Tien Giang province continued to rise compared to previous days. In the Cai Lay area, many agricultural product wholesalers were purchasing Grade A Monthong (Thai) durian at prices ranging from 190,000 - 195,000 VND/kg (2.7 compartments, 1.9 - 5.2 kg), while Grade B durian was priced at 170,000 - 175,000 VND/kg (2.5 compartments, 1.7 - 5.6 kg). Grade A Ri 6 durian was priced at 130,000 - 140,000 VND/kg (2.7 compartments, 1.9 - 5 kg), and Grade B durian at approximately 115,000 VND/kg (2.5 compartments, 1.7 - 5.5 kg). It was noted that Thai durian prices have increased most sharply in recent days.

Mr. Luong Van Han, Director of Phu Quy Agricultural Cooperative (Phu Quy commune, Cai Lay town), said that cooperative members and farmers in the commune are entering the beginning of the durian harvest season. Currently, traders are buying high-quality Ri 6 durians at the farm gate for 135,000 - 140,000 VND/kg, and Thai durians for over 160,000 VND/kg.

“This year, out of 10 durian orchards that attempted to induce off-season flowering, only about 3 succeeded. This year, durian farmers are experiencing crop failure due to the unsuccessful off-season flowering treatment. Durian prices are increasing daily, but the harvest yield is not high,” added Mr. Luong Van Han.

In Cai Be district, following the general trend, durian prices have continued to rise in recent days. According to Phan Thanh Son, Vice Chairman of the Cai Be District People's Committee, the district has over 9,000 hectares of durian orchards, with approximately 55% - 60% currently bearing fruit.

Currently, the price of Ri 6 durian in the area is around 137,000 VND/kg, while Thai durian is around 165,000 VND/kg. Durian is in high demand due to crop failure this year. Many durian orchards have experienced flower and fruit drop due to the weather. Due to limited supply, durian prices are trending upwards.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, by the end of 2023, the durian growing area in the province was approximately 21,790 hectares. Of this, the area producing fruit was about 14,915 hectares.

Since the protocol on the official export of durian to the Chinese market came into effect on July 11, 2022, the price of this fruit in the province has remained relatively high, helping farmers earn high profits.

Mandarin oranges in Ho Chi Minh City have plummeted in price, now only costing 4,000 – 5,000 VND/kg.

At noon on November 7th, on Pham Hung Street (Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), street vendors displayed dozens of bags of mandarin oranges right on the sidewalk, blaring through loudspeakers to attract customers. They were selling the oranges for 50,000 VND per 10kg bag. "Mandarin oranges from the Mekong Delta are in season, so they're ripe, sweet, and juicy. Buy them to drink and boost your vitamin C intake, which helps cool you down in the hot weather and is very good for your health," the seller urged customers.

Explaining the very low price of mandarin oranges, only 5,000 VND/kg, the seller said that many orchards in the Mekong Delta have a very large harvest during the season. Since this product cannot be exported, the price has dropped sharply to only about 2,000 VND/kg. "I buy them in bulk, then divide them into 10kg bags for customers' convenience," said the mandarin orange vendor. However, observation shows that the pre-packaged oranges are often small, many have very thick peels, or are already overripe...

On Hung Phu Street (District 8), mandarin oranges are also sold in 10kg bags, with a discounted price of only 4,000 VND/kg. "Although the price is low, thanks to selling in large quantities, we still manage to sell quite a lot. Customers mainly buy in the late afternoon and evening," said the orange seller.

For just a few tens of thousands of dong, people can buy several kilograms of oranges to squeeze juice for the whole family. Despite the low price of oranges, the price of a glass of orange juice remains unchanged at many stalls and shops. Specifically, a glass of orange juice sold for takeaway at a street stall costs around 20,000 dong; while in cafes and restaurants, it costs 50,000 to 80,000 dong per glass.

According to a representative from the Binh Dien wholesale agricultural market, approximately 86 tons of mandarin oranges arrive at the market each night. Grade 1 oranges are still priced at 13,000 VND/kg, while Grade 2 oranges are priced at 10,000 VND/kg. These prices are still quite high compared to two years ago when mandarin orange prices sometimes dropped to around 8,000 VND/kg.

"The oranges sold at the wholesale market are uniformly selected in terms of variety and quality, while the cheap, mass-produced oranges are mostly substandard, 'you get what you pay for'," said Ms. Binh, a fruit trader at Binh Dien market.
