A few weeks ago, the Lite version of TikTok was launched in European Union (EU) countries with a daily reward feature for users to interact with content on the platform. This caused European regulators to conduct an investigation on the grounds that this feature has the potential to cause addiction, especially among young people. And today, TikTok responded by temporarily suspending the feature while the investigation is resolved.
TikTok Lite is an alternative to the main TikTok app intended to be easier to use on slow internet connections. This application is available in many countries in Asia and was opened in France and Spain in early April.
Inside the application is a feature that pays users rewards in coins for logging in, watching ads and liking videos. TikTok coins can be redeemed for Amazon vouchers and PayPal gift cards. However, to achieve it, users must perform many activities to earn a significant amount of money. It is estimated that 1 hour of watching a video earns about 0,38 USD.
The newly launched Lite version of TikTok has been investigated
Quote Dao digital services law, the European Commission took action and said it was particularly concerned about the addictive effects of this feature on children. Responding to Reuters, a TikTok spokesperson said the feature was not available to users under 18, but the European Commission's complaint found that TikTok's age verification mechanism was not strong enough to prevent children from signing up.
