Analyst Jeff Pu from GF Securities has just said that the iPhone 17 will not be equipped with a new generation chip but will still use the A18 chip, the same type in the iPhone 16. The chip can be manufactured on TSMC's second-generation 3nm process.
The standard iPhone 17 may be just a minor upgrade over the iPhone 16 |
Meanwhile, the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air – expected to replace the Plus version – is equipped with the A19 chip, while the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max duo will be equipped with the A19 Pro chip. All are manufactured on TSMC's third-generation 3nm process.
In addition, Mr. Pu also revealed that the standard iPhone 17 may only use 8GB RAM, identical to the iPhone 16.
Last month, analyst Ming Chi Kuo also said that the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max models will use 12GB of RAM to meet the requirements of running Apple Intelligence. He also mentioned that Apple has not decided whether to use 8GB or 12GB of RAM for the standard iPhone 17.
If Pu's news turns out to be true, the iPhone 17 will be a minor upgrade over the iPhone 16, retaining both the design and the chip. However, recent rumors suggest the device will use a larger 6.3-inch screen, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a front camera that will be upgraded from 12MP to 24MP.
The iPhone 17 generation is expected to be launched by Apple in September this year.
