Unimed, a service provider based in Wadern, Saarland, confirmed the incident occurred in mid-April. According to Unimed, the company's accounting system was restored shortly afterward. The company stated that it is working to resolve the issue and assess the impact on its partner hospital and patients.
Initial investigations revealed that the hacker group attempted to encrypt Unimed's entire system for extortion purposes, but the plot was thwarted. However, before the security system was activated, a large amount of data was stolen. All the leaked information concerned patients receiving medical treatment under private insurance or paying their own bills.
Many major hospitals in Germany had previously confirmed being severely affected, with hundreds of thousands of patients' information and personal data being leaked.
