Seeing the pride and joy on his children's faces as they ran to hug him and proudly told their friends, "Today, and for many days to come, Dad will pick me up!" moved him deeply.
Welcoming us into her rented room near his unit, Ms. Tran Thi Le Thuy, Mr. Ly's wife, recounted that they had been classmates throughout high school, sharing many memories. After graduating from high school, he was accepted into the Army Officer School 2, while she passed the entrance exam to the Vietnam-Korea Friendship College of Information Technology. Their friendship continued through handwritten letters.

In 2015, after graduating and securing stable jobs, they got married. Their life as a young couple was filled with many difficulties and hardships. When their daughter, Nguyen Tran Vy Chuc, was born, the economic burden on their small family became even heavier. To help support her husband financially, she and her daughter moved back to her parents' house so that her grandparents could look after the child and she could find a job.
Recalling the April 30th holiday a few years ago, she and her daughter had planned to visit her husband at his unit. However, before they left, her daughter developed a persistent high fever. They took her to Children's Hospital 2 for examination, but while the doctors couldn't find the cause, they concluded she had acute malnutrition and rickets (she was 3 years old but weighed less than 8kg). With the support of her unit's leaders and commanders, her husband requested time off to be with her daughter. But when she saw her father, little Vy Chúc burst into tears because... he was a stranger, and absolutely refused to go with him.
In 2020, she gave birth to Nguyen Tran Truc Quynh. Having to care for two children alone while also managing household chores, she discussed with her husband the possibility of quitting her current job to start her own business. Recalling those past months, Ms. Thuy softly said: "Since we got married 10 years ago, my husband, children, and I have been separated by hundreds of kilometers. Meanwhile, he is frequently away for studies and work. Therefore, the idea of having their father pick them up and drop them off at school was probably just a dream for Nguyen Tran Vy Chuc and her sister."
Out of love and concern for his children and wife, who have endured many hardships, Mr. Ly recently discussed with his wife the possibility of moving the three of them closer to his unit so they could spend more time together. Now, their lives are still full of difficulties and hardships, but whenever the whole family gathers around the dinner table and they see the radiant smiles on their children's faces, Mr. Ly and Ms. Thuy feel a warmth in their hearts.
