Shrimp death due to erratic weather

Việt NamViệt Nam10/06/2024

In many shrimp farming areas in Nghe An , disease outbreaks have occurred, causing mass shrimp deaths. Among them, there are areas with new diseases.

In recent days, the hot weather has lasted for a long time with high temperatures, alternating with sudden heavy rains. This unusual weather phenomenon has made shrimp farmers extremely worried. In many shrimp farming areas in Nghe An, disease outbreaks have occurred, causing mass shrimp deaths. Among them, there are farming areas with new diseases.

Mr. Luu Dinh Viet's 3,000m2 shrimp pond in Nghi Tien Commune, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An Province has been stocked for more than 60 days. In recent days, the weather has changed from intense heat to rain, causing the shrimp to go into thermal shock, with the risk of disease outbreaks affecting the productivity and size of the farmed shrimp.

Mr. Luu Dinh Viet - Nghi Tien Commune, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An said: "Shrimp are sensitive to water sources and weather changes, so they often get diseases such as spots, pink body, muscle necrosis... This is a level 3 alarm, not level 2 anymore."

Sudden changes in weather and long-standing environmental pollution have made shrimp diseases in many farming areas more serious. In the shrimp farming area in Quynh Bang commune, Quynh Luu district, since the beginning of the year, only about 1/3 of the area has been stocked, however, the purchased fry only last about 2-3 weeks, or even less than a week, and die en masse.

Mr. Ho Dang Cuc - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Bang Commune, Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province commented: "When catching the shrimp, the majority of about 90% of the released shrimp are dead. Currently, the locality is recommending that people in ponds that are safe to raise them, otherwise they should stop to ensure the environment for a long period of 1-2 years and then raise them again."

Mr. Manh Duy Luan - Deputy Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Hoang Mai town, Nghe An province commented: "Currently, the situation is very complicated, a new disease has appeared, which is glass disease. When an epidemic occurs, it is almost impossible to save it. Some households are high-tech, raising shrimp in two or three stages. These days, their farming areas have roofs, are stable and can manage the environment and temperature. And ponds without roofs will almost certainly be affected."

Unstable weather, large temperature differences between day and night, and sudden changes in the pond environment make shrimp susceptible to shock and susceptible to pathogens. Therefore, shrimp farmers need to closely monitor their ponds, observe unusual phenomena in shrimp when the weather changes, and take timely measures.
