Shrimp died due to erratic weather.

Disease outbreaks have occurred in many shrimp farming areas in Nghe An province , causing mass shrimp deaths. In some areas, a new disease has emerged.

In recent days, prolonged hot weather with high temperatures, interspersed with sudden heavy rains, has caused great concern among shrimp farmers . In many shrimp farming areas in Nghe An province, disease outbreaks have occurred, leading to mass shrimp deaths. In some areas, a new disease has emerged.

Mr. Luu Dinh Viet's 3,000m2 shrimp pond in Nghi Tien Commune, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An Province, has been stocked with shrimp for over 60 days. In recent days, the weather has shifted from intense heat to rain, causing thermal shock to the shrimp and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks, which could affect yield and size.

Mr. Luu Dinh Viet from Nghi Tien commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province said: "Shrimp are sensitive to water sources and changing weather, so they often get diseases such as spot disease, red body disease, muscle necrosis... This is a level 3 alert, not level 2 anymore."

Sudden weather changes combined with long-standing environmental pollution in shrimp farming have exacerbated disease outbreaks in many farming areas. In the shrimp farming area of Quynh Bang commune, Quynh Luu district, only about one-third of the area has been stocked since the beginning of the year. However, the purchased shrimp fry die in large numbers after only 2-3 weeks, or even less than a week, after being stocked.

Mr. Ho Dang Cuc, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Bang commune, Quynh Luu district, Nghe An province, stated: "When we bring in the shrimp fry, the vast majority, about 90%, die after stocking. Currently, the local authorities are advising farmers to continue farming in ponds that are safe, and to stop farming in others to ensure environmental protection for a period of 1-2 years before resuming."

Mr. Manh Duy Luan, Deputy Director of the Agricultural Services Center of Hoang Mai town, Nghe An province, commented: "Currently, the situation is very complex, with the emergence of a new disease called glass disease. When an outbreak occurs, it is almost impossible to salvage the situation. Some households with high-tech shrimp farming, raising shrimp in two or three stages, have covered areas, stable environments, and controlled temperatures. Those ponds without covers will be almost certainly affected."

Unpredictable weather patterns, large temperature fluctuations between day and night, and sudden changes in the pond environment make farmed shrimp susceptible to shock and disease. Therefore, shrimp farmers need to closely monitor their ponds, observe any unusual behavior of the shrimp when the weather changes, and take timely corrective measures.
