According to RIA Novosti on May 16, the Kremlin Press Office announced that, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay an official visit to Beijing from May 19 to 20.
In Beijing, the two leaders will focus on in-depth discussions of the strategic partnership between Moscow and Beijing, as well as exchange views on international issues of mutual concern. Following the talks, a joint statement and a series of important cooperation documents are expected to be signed. Afterwards, President Putin and President Xi Jinping will attend the opening ceremony of the Russia-China Education Year. During the visit, the Russian leader will also meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
In addition to bilateral agendas, the Kremlin also expressed particular interest in the recent summit between Beijing and Washington.
"We are closely monitoring information from the media. However, we hope to receive the most direct and accurate information when we are in China," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Peskov emphasized that the upcoming high-level contacts between Russia and China will be a good opportunity for both sides to have a frank exchange on the recent dialogues between Beijing and Washington.
A Kremlin representative further analyzed: "Clearly, when the world's first and second largest economies engage in direct dialogue at the highest level, it is always the focus of attention and analysis for all countries, including Russia. In terms of purchasing power parity (PPP), China is the number one economy and the US is second; and in terms of absolute size, the US is number one and China is number two."
Experts expect that this trip by the Russian President will create a major breakthrough in economic relations between the two superpowers.
Speaking to the TASS news agency on the sidelines of the 6th Central Asia Conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club (held from May 12-13 in Gelendzhik), Professor Yang Cheng, Executive Director of the Institute of Global Governance and Regional Studies at Shanghai University of International Studies, said that Russian President Putin's visit to China will create a strong new impetus, promoting expanded cooperation in the fields of energy, artificial intelligence (AI), and high technology.
"For substantive cooperation in various industries, including energy, high-tech fields, and artificial intelligence, I believe this visit will provide a completely new impetus," the Chinese expert affirmed.
Professor Duong Thanh called this a "historic moment," because 2026 marks a series of major anniversaries: the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Friendly Cooperation between Russia and China, the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration establishing a comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction between the two countries.
"Both Russia and China support a multipolar world . We hope that our neighboring countries – Central Asia and other regions – will become stable and prosperous. Therefore, we expect groundbreaking shifts in bilateral cooperation," expert Duong Thanh expressed his expectations.
