According to the Russian news agency Tass , President Putin has arrived in Beijing, beginning a two-day state visit to China from May 16-17. Russian media reported that President Putin's plane landed in Beijing, and senior Chinese officials greeted the Russian leader at the airport.
Yury Ushakov, the Russian president's foreign policy advisor, said that China was not a random choice for President Putin's first foreign trip after his election, but rather a response to a similar friendly gesture by Chinese President Xi Jinping last year. The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Russian president's visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, Beijing highly values the strategic diplomatic leadership of President Putin and President Xi Jinping in shaping bilateral relations. "The two heads of state agreed to continue maintaining close relations so that Sino-Russian relations can continue to develop successfully and stably," the spokesperson stated. Tass reported that Putin's visit to China is divided into two phases. The Russian president is expected to visit Beijing and Harbin. In Beijing, President Putin will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders are expected to hold formal face-to-face talks and talks involving delegations, as well as informal in-person meetings. The Russian president is accompanied by a large delegation including five deputy prime ministers, heads of economic, diplomatic, and security agencies, as well as the heads of the Federal Agency for Military-Technical Cooperation, the Russian Railways, Rosatom, and Roscosmos. In addition, high-ranking officials from 20 Russian regions are also accompanying the president on this visit to China. The bilateral talks are expected to focus on trade and economic cooperation. At the meeting, Putin and Xi will also address pressing political and regional issues. According to the Russian president's foreign policy aide, the most important part of the talks in Beijing will be a closed-door, informal meeting. Following a "1+4" model (one side plus four), the two leaders will hold crucial discussions on Ukraine. The second phase of President Putin's state visit to China will take place in Harbin, the capital and largest city of Heilongjiang province. There, he will attend the opening ceremony of the 8th Russia-China Expo and the 4th Russia-China Forum on Interregional Cooperation, and will meet with students and faculty of the Harbin Institute of Technology. In addition, President Putin is expected to hold discussions with Kremlin journalists.
