Russian news agency Tass reported that President Putin has arrived in Beijing, starting a two-day state visit to China on May 16-17. According to Russian media, the plane carrying President Putin has landed in Beijing. High-ranking Chinese officials welcomed the Russian leader at the airport.
Yury Ushakov, a foreign policy aide to the Russian president, said that China was not a random choice for Putin's first foreign trip after his election, but was a response to a similar gesture of friendship made by Chinese President Xi Jinping last year. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stressed that the Russian president's visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, Beijing attaches great importance to the strategic diplomatic leadership of President Putin and President Xi Jinping in shaping bilateral relations. "The two heads of state agreed to continue to maintain close relations so that China-Russia relations can continue to develop successfully and steadily," the spokesman said. Tass reported that Putin's visit to China is divided into two stages. The Russian president is expected to visit Beijing and Harbin. In Beijing, President Putin will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders are expected to hold formal one-on-one talks and delegation-led talks, as well as informal one-on-one talks. The Russian president is accompanied by a large delegation that includes five deputy prime ministers, heads of economic, diplomatic and security agencies, as well as the heads of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, Russian Railways, Rosatom and Roscosmos. In addition, senior officials from 20 Russian regions are accompanying the president on his visit to China. Bilateral talks are expected to focus on trade and economic cooperation. During the meeting, Putin and Xi will also touch on pressing political and regional issues. According to the Russian president's foreign policy aide, the most important part of the talks in Beijing will be a closed, informal meeting. In the "1+4" format on each side, the two leaders will hold important talks on Ukraine. The second stage of President Putin's state visit to China will take place in Harbin, the capital and largest city of Heilongjiang Province. There, Putin will attend the opening ceremony of the 8th Russia-China Expo and the 4th Russia-China Forum on Interregional Cooperation, and will meet with students and teachers of the Harbin Institute of Technology. In addition, President Putin is expected to hold talks with Kremlin journalists.
