The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has recently issued a document providing professional guidance for primary schools in the 2024-2025 school year.

One of the key requirements is to streamline competitions for teachers and students, while promoting the open classroom model.

According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training , the department only organizes a limited number of competitions related to teaching and learning activities in the general education program, with a focus on enhancing creative experiential activities.

These competitions are aligned with the requirements for developing the competencies and qualities of teachers and students. The competition format ensures cost-effectiveness and efficiency. Teachers and students can participate voluntarily and free of charge…

However, according to many teachers in Ho Chi Minh City, competitions for teachers and students are not currently organized solely by the education sector.

"Many competitions are organized by various departments and units (outside the education sector), but they keep pushing down the responsibility and requiring schools to participate. There are too many competitions and they overlap, putting pressure on both teachers and students. The hardest hit are us teachers," said a fourth-grade teacher in downtown Ho Chi Minh City.

The teacher suggested: "We hope for a regulation that allows schools to decline extracurricular competitions, so they can focus on teaching and learning."

Change your attitude when observing a lesson.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has requested that primary school principals innovate their attitudes in school management in general and during classroom observations in particular. This innovation, with its gentle and friendly approach from the school administration, will encourage teachers to be more confident in innovating their teaching methods.

It is known that many primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City are currently implementing reforms in school management. Among these reforms, classroom observation and visits are regular activities of the school's management board to provide feedback, guidance, and timely professional development for teachers.

This work is particularly important during the current curriculum and textbook reform period. However, in reality, some primary schools still follow the old practice: classroom observation is used to "dig up" teachers' shortcomings, to assess their skills and expertise, and for performance evaluations… Therefore, some teachers are worried and make students prepare in advance to "perform" during classroom observation sessions.

In order to reduce pressure on teachers and students, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a directive to reduce the number of national-level competitions; only a few basic competitions, closely linked to the political tasks of the sector, will be organized.
