Hearing insults, he took a knife and went to stab someone.

After a conflict arose between the two during a drinking session, Nguyen Tiet Cuong (born in 1984, residing in Chau Thanh hamlet) thought Huynh Thanh Tung (born in 1980, residing in Hamlet 3, Chau Phu A Ward, Chau Doc City) was drinking at the house next door and insulting him, so he took a knife to seek revenge. According to the indictment, at approximately 8 PM on June 24, 2023, Huynh Thanh Hau (born in 1988, residing in Group 12, Hamlet 3) was drinking with Cuong and a group of friends at Hau's house. At the same time, Tung (Hau's older brother) was also drinking with Huynh Minh Tam (born in 1978, Tung's friend) at the house next door. While drinking, Tung saw Nguyen Si Long (a neighbor) returning from a drinking session and invited him in, but Long refused, leading to an argument. Tung grabbed Long's shirt and hit him. Hau and Cuong intervened, and Long left. A short while later, Long returned and went into Hau's house to drink. They were drinking together. At that moment, Tung was sitting at home drinking when he heard loud shouting and cursing. Tung thought it was him, so Cuong and Tung started arguing...

Defendant Cuong

Enraged, at around 9 PM that same day, Cuong went home, retrieved a knife hidden in his pants, and called Tran Dai Tin (born in 2002, Cuong's friend) for backup. Tin then brought along Tran Minh Tam (born in 2003) and To Tuan Tu (born in 2000) to the area at the beginning of alley 217. There, Tin, Tam, and Tu saw Cuong drinking alcohol and tried to dissuade him, but Cuong refused and took out the knife he was holding to attack Tung. When he saw Tung sitting alone drinking beer in front of his house, Cuong stabbed Tung once, causing the victim to fall backward. At this point, the blade bounced off and struck Tung's left thigh, severing an artery. Seeing Tung lying motionless on the floor, Cuong stopped and fled the scene.

At approximately 9:50 PM on the same day, Cuong surrendered to the Chau Phu A Ward Police and handed over the knife. Tung, however, was discovered by Hau and others and taken to the An Giang Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment. He died at approximately 12:30 AM on June 25, 2023. The cause of death was acute circulatory failure due to a severed left femoral artery. The Provincial People's Court sentenced the defendant Cuong to 18 years in prison for "Murder" under Clause 1, Article 123 of the Penal Code.

From unfounded suspicion to imprisonment.

Despite having two previous convictions, Chau Phong (born in 1999, residing in Tan Dong hamlet, Oc Eo town, Thoai Son district) still couldn't shake off his aggressive and thuggish behavior. Around 3 PM on December 22, 2024, Phong, Chau Ri (born in 1997, Phong's older brother), Neang Van Quy (born in 1997), Neang Van Choi (born in 1999), all residing in Tan Dong hamlet, and Duong Van Hau (born in 2001) were drinking alcohol in an empty plot of land near Phong's house. After about a liter of alcohol, Chau Ri stopped and left; Phong, Hau, and Quy continued drinking. While drinking, Hau went into Phong's kitchen, took a 52cm long homemade knife that was near his seat, and said he wanted to stab Truong Van Tai.

At approximately 4 PM that same day, upon seeing Bui Van Cong (born in 1991, residing in the same neighborhood), Hau invited Cong to join him for a drink. As soon as Cong sat down, Phong recalled that in 2023, Chau Ret (Phong's father) had been beaten while drinking with Cong and Lam Hoang Sang. Phong suspected Cong of assaulting Mr. Ret, so he grabbed a homemade knife that Hau had left nearby and repeatedly stabbed Cong. Cong used his legs to defend himself and fled. Phong chased after him with the knife, but Hau managed to grab it from him. Afterward, Phong went home, told Quy to wipe the blood off the knife, and threw it away.

Defendant Phong

Cong was taken by Mr. Choi to An Giang Central General Hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred to Can Tho Central General Hospital for further treatment, and was discharged on January 3, 2025, with a 67% disability rating. Phong, on the other hand, surrendered to the police in Oc Eo town.

On December 26, 2024, Chau Phong was prosecuted and investigated. The defendant Chau Phong's criminal act was exceptionally serious, committed with deliberate intent, demonstrating a thuggish nature, disregard for the victim's life, contempt for the law, and infringement upon the victim's life. Therefore, the Provincial People's Court sentenced Chau Phong to 18 years in prison for "Murder" under Clause 1, Article 123 of the Penal Code.
