Inter Milan legend Wesley Sneijder sparked intense debate with his shocking statement following the second leg of the Champions League semi-final between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.
In the early hours of May 6th, the match at Emirates Stadium ended with a 1-0 victory for Arsenal thanks to a goal from Bukayo Saka, thus helping the English team advance to the final with an aggregate score of 2-1. However, the performance of both teams did not satisfy Sneijder.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport , the former Dutch midfielder stated bluntly: "After 35 minutes, I think UEFA should intervene. They should call London, have both teams leave the field, and hold the final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain right away."
According to Sneijder, the match was dull as Atletico deliberately dropped deep, ceding control of the game to Arsenal. This stifled the tempo and resulted in a lack of quality attacking opportunities.
Nevertheless, Sneijder still has respect for manager Mikel Arteta. He believes the Spanish strategist deserves credit for leading Arsenal to the final despite not having many top-class stars.
Despite the criticism, Arsenal are having an impressive Champions League season. They are unbeaten after 14 matches, have conceded only 6 goals, and have shown incredible consistency.
The London team also became the only team in history to go undefeated in 14 matches in a single season and could extend this record to 15 if they win the final.
Arsenal's opponent in the final in Budapest will be the winner of the Bayern Munich - PSG match; the second leg between these two clubs promises to be a more exciting and entertaining encounter.
