The MV "Rockstar" marks Lisa's solo comeback after 3 years (Blackpink) and is currently receiving the most attention in Kpop. Discussions about Lisa's style, image, and musical color are bustling on social networks.
But recently, Lisa's sexy star-shaped shirt design in the MV "Rockstar" was suddenly suspected of plagiarism.
Messages between designer Yue Yang (who runs the brand A1J) and a user were shared online on Chinese platform xiaohongshu.
In the message, the designer explained that they were never contacted about using this design and were surprised that Lisa's team used a "stolen" version.
On the site, designers share photos of their own designs and the process of creating items dating back to 2020.
At the same time, they inform consumers about “copycat” designs based on the original design that are sold for cheaper prices online.
After the messages were made public, the designer posted photos on Instagram showing the similarities. Yue Yang's star shirt design has been used by a number of celebrities and influencers, most notably NingNing of the group aespa.
Yue Yang said: “That star design was either blatantly copied by someone else or slightly modified to look different… Including many products on Taobao.
Yue Yang said she has tried to sue or report counterfeit products over the past few years, but applying for a copyright for this design is both time-consuming and expensive. So she has not been able to register a copyright during the Covid pandemic.
Especially when her outfits are designed and manufactured in London (UK), while the copycat outfits are all manufactured elsewhere, where laws in different regions are always different.
Yue Yang has tried to contact the stylist who copied her design, but has not received a response. After speaking out on Chinese platforms and on Instagram, she received many threatening comments and messages from Lisa's fans.
