INFORMATION ABOUT THE PAINTING
"FIGHTING WITH JEALOUSY" Material: Lacquer carving - Size: 50 x 60 cm Adapted from Dong Ho folk paintings The painting "Fighting with Jealousy" criticizes polygamy and unfaithful husbands who destroy family happiness. The painting also criticizes wives who lack sufficient care, empathy, and understanding, leading their husbands to seek out other women and causing family tragedy for their children. The wife's anger diminishes her own value. Furthermore, the painting criticizes third parties who transform themselves into mistresses, bringing disgrace upon themselves. Family relationships are one of the themes reflected in the painting quite profoundly and wittily. Under the feudal system, men were allowed to take "five wives and seven concubines," and this polygamy inevitably led to family conflicts. "Fighting with Jealousy" is a typical Dong Ho folk painting belonging to this theme.
