Salt making in Bac Lieu is a traditional craft with techniques passed down through many generations.

According to surveys, there are families in the area who have continued the salt-making profession for up to six generations. Although the process of preserving the craft has gone through many ups and downs, the salt farmers here remain steadfast in their commitment.

Currently, Bac Lieu has a total of over 1,500 hectares of salt-growing land, yielding nearly 80,000 tons in the 2024 harvest season.

Although the area of salt fields has decreased significantly, Bac Lieu still maintains its position as one of the provinces with the largest salt field area in the country.

According to many historical records, Bac Lieu was formerly known as the "Land of Salt" by people throughout the six provinces of Southern Vietnam. At that time, instead of directly calling it Bac Lieu salt, people attached the name "Ba Thac" to the salt grains - the name of a river mouth at the end of the vast, alluvial Hau Giang River.

Later, people also called Bac Lieu salt Long Dien salt (because Long Dien has the largest and most famous salt production area in Bac Lieu).
