Bac Ha Market has long been known as one of the most distinctive markets in Bac Ha, Lao Cai, showcasing the rich traditional culture and vibrant life of the Mong, Tay, Nung, Dao, and Phu La ethnic groups. It's also an attractive tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors whenever they come to Bac Ha. Especially at Bac Ha Market, visitors can enjoy the famous Thang Co stew, savor fragrant corn wine, or savor the refreshing bitter-sweet taste of teas like Tam That flower tea and Ban Lien tea.

Bac Ha Market is located in Bac Ha town, Lao Cai province, about 70km from Lao Cai city. It's situated right in the town center and serves as a meeting place for people from the mountainous regions and ethnic minorities. Every Sunday, groups of people flock to Bac Ha town to attend the market; going to the market has become an indispensable part of the rich cultural identity of the local people. From above, Bac Ha cultural market looks like a vibrant, moving flower garden, with the colorful dresses of ethnic minority women blending with the fresh colors of the market stalls.

Previously, Bac Ha market was held on a gentle hillside. Later, it was rebuilt on a concrete foundation and divided into various sections, with many different stalls. There were stalls selling livestock and poultry, stalls selling general merchandise such as plows, hoes, shovels, and knives, stalls selling brocade fabrics and jewelry, stalls selling vegetables and fruits grown by the local people, and a food stall area with steaming pots of thang co (a traditional stew), spreading its fragrant aroma.

What truly breathes life into this market is the culture and customs of the ethnic minorities living here. Once you've set foot in this market, you can hardly miss the dishes that are rich in ethnic identity, such as "thang co" (a traditional stew), "Bac Ha sour pho," "corn rice cake," "sticky rice cake," and "bamboo rice cake"... these are all famous specialties of the Bac Ha plateau.

Another highlight that cannot be overlooked is the brocade market, where ethnic people sell handcrafted brocade items embroidered, woven, and embroidered by their own skillful hands. Here, visitors can choose to buy a few small, pretty dresses, scarves, bags, etc., in vibrant colors to take home as gifts for family and friends. Or, visitors can explore and admire the traditional musical instruments; on weekends, it's easy to hear the gentle sounds of the khene, flute, and mouth harp, which touch the heart.

Amidst the current trend of commercialization of highland markets, Bac Ha is one of the rare places still striving to preserve and maintain the ethnic identity and unique characteristics of its traditional markets. The Bac Ha market reflects the vibrant community life of the ethnic people in the Northwest highlands of Lao Cai province , helping them preserve their unique traditional cultural values. Currently, this market continues to attract a large number of domestic and international tourists.
