The aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush has been present in the Middle East since late April and is currently one of only two US aircraft carriers still operating in the region. Although the US has lifted its blockade on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, it still maintains a significant military force there.
As of mid-May, Operation Epic Fury had resulted in the loss of 42 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters for the U.S. military, according to the latest update reported to Congress .
This figure does not include the US AH-64 Apache helicopter that was shot down by an Iranian UAV in early June. The two crew members on board that helicopter were rescued safely.
That incident led to the US launching airstrikes against Iran, which it described as "self-defense."
