On October 22, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that China had agreed to review the tariffs imposed on wine imported from Australia.

This move is seen as paving the way for Canberra to stop taking its dispute with Beijing to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Albanese's press release stated: "We welcome China's agreement to quickly review its tariffs," adding that the process is expected to take five months.

China imposed import restrictions on Australian wine, barley, coal, and other goods in 2020, following a deterioration in bilateral relations due to a series of issues. Beijing has since lifted these restrictions on coal and barley imports from Australia. According to Australian government figures, China is Australia's largest trading partner, accounting for nearly one-third of the country's total trade.

On this occasion, Mr. Albanese also announced his plan to visit China from November 4th to 7th. This will be the first visit to China by an Australian leader since 2016, marking an improvement in bilateral relations. Mr. Albanese emphasized: “I look forward to the visit being an important step toward ensuring a stable and effective relationship with China.”

Since taking office in May 2022, Prime Minister Albanese has attempted to improve relations with China, which had deteriorated under the previous administration of Scott Morrison.
