(QBĐT) - The Giang Man mountain range (Minh Hoa district) is covered by clouds and fog all year round, and the terrain is rugged, but that does not mean that the forest protection work here is neglected. Whether it is the bitterly cold winter or the busy days of holidays and Tet, the authorities and forest owners still proactively arrange forces to be on duty to guard and protect the forests so they can be peaceful...
From the top of Da Deo Pass, we “packed our food and carried our bags” and followed the interdisciplinary working group of Thuong Hoa commune, including: Thuong Hoa Forest Ranger Station (under Minh Hoa District Forest Ranger Department), Phu Minh Border Guard Working Group (under Ca Xeng Border Guard Station), Thuong Hoa Forest Protection Station (under Bac Quang Binh Industrial Forestry Company Limited), Phu Minh Village Community Forest Management Board (Thuong Hoa commune)..., to patrol some areas of the primary forest of Giang Man mountain. This is just one of many regular forest patrols that the interdisciplinary working group has regularly maintained in recent years.
Along the forest patrol route, Deputy Head of Thuong Hoa Forest Ranger Station Hoang Tuan Anh confided: “The forest area here is still quite pristine, with many rare and valuable species of animals and plants. About ten years ago, the forest area of Thuong Hoa commune was always a “hot spot” for deforestation in the province, especially during Tet. Some illegal loggers were very aggressive, using many tricks to resist, flee, and even attack when they realized that the forest protection force was still thin. But since the Forestry Law was promulgated, the interdisciplinary forest protection force of Thuong Hoa commune was established and put into operation, all illegal loggers operating in the area were almost “eliminated”. Thanks to that, the forest has been peaceful to grow and recover quickly...”.
Thuong Hoa commune currently has a total natural area of over 35,000 hectares, of which nearly 33,000 hectares are natural forests, the rest are planted forests, unforested forests and other purposes. In the commune, there are currently forest owners assigned to manage, including: Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park 21,521.6 hectares; Bac Quang Binh Industrial Forestry Company Limited 2,098.5 hectares; households 336 hectares; Thuong Hoa Commune People's Committee 8,137 hectares; and the community 970.6 hectares. |
Leading us directly to an ancient forest, where there are trees as big as 2-3 adult arms to hug, Mr. Thai Xuan Hong, Party Cell Secretary and Head of the Phu Minh Village Community Forest Management Board, said: “Since 2015, the village has been assigned by the State to manage over 800 hectares of community forest and forestry land. Since the forest was assigned to the Phu Minh village community, the responsibility for forest protection of the whole village has been significantly increased, and forest cover here has always had positive growth. Due to a short period of time without funding for activities (2021-2022), forest management and patrolling were not carried out regularly, and were still loose in some places. However, since 2023, thanks to the re-funding, the forest patrolling and protection activities have been assigned by the whole village to be carried out responsibly and seriously 24/7; especially during Tet, this activity will be enhanced. stronger. The forest is well protected, now, many rare animals have reappeared with greater frequency such as birds, monkeys, langurs, muntjacs, black ferrets, wild boars... In 2024, the whole village received 571 million VND from the source of forest protection contracts and forest carbon credit payments, very happy. Now, every villager in Phu Minh village sees forest protection as preserving the future, food and clothing for each person's life, demonstrating responsibility to the whole society, the surrounding living environment...".
Mr. Tran Dinh Cuong, Head of Thuong Hoa Forest Protection Station under Bac Quang Binh Industrial Forestry Company Limited, continued the story: Quite early on, our station proactively advised the company to come up with a plan to strengthen forest protection during the Lunar New Year with many key tasks such as arranging enough staff to be on duty 24/7 in all assigned forest areas; strictly "barricading" at the fishbone routes and setting up additional checkpoints right at the top of Da Deo Pass to promptly detect and handle violations; infiltrating and understanding the operating rules of illegal loggers to prevent and fight more effectively. Currently, the entire station has only 6 staff members but is assigned by the company to manage nearly 3,000 hectares of natural forest, a very heavy responsibility. Therefore, the station always determines that it is necessary to coordinate well with functional forces and adjacent forest owners to increase "eyes and ears", strength and solidarity to prevent and repel forest encroachment.
Before saying goodbye, in the middle of the old forest canopy, Mr. Dinh Minh Khuong, a ranger at Thuong Hoa Forest Ranger Station confided that the traditional Tet holiday is often an occasion for everyone to gather and enjoy the joyful and warm atmosphere with their families. However, for the majority of those who are tasked with protecting the forest like us, everyone knows that we need to put aside some personal feelings and sacrifice some time to join hands to protect the green color of the forests, which is also a way to show our dedication to the community and society...
