Forest week in the Giang Man mountain area

Việt NamViệt Nam23/02/2025

(QBĐT) - The Giang Man mountain range (Minh Hoa district) is covered in mist year-round, with rugged terrain, but this does not deter forest protection efforts. Whether it's the bitterly cold winter or the bustling days of holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year), functional forces and forest owners proactively deploy personnel to guard and protect the forests, ensuring their peace and tranquility...

From the top of Da Deo Pass, we packed our lunches and followed the inter-agency task force of Thuong Hoa commune, including: Thuong Hoa Forest Ranger Station ( thuộc Minh Hoa District Forest Ranger Unit), Phu Minh Border Guard task force ( thuộc Ca Xeng Border Guard Post), Thuong Hoa Forest Protection Station ( thuộc Bac Quang Binh Forestry and Industrial Company Limited), Phu Minh Community Forest Management Board (Thuong Hoa commune)..., on a walking patrol of several areas of pristine forest on Giang Man mountain. This is just one of many regular forest patrols that the inter-agency task force has consistently carried out in recent years.

Along the way on a forest patrol, Deputy Head of Thuong Hoa Forest Ranger Station, Hoang Tuan Anh, shared his thoughts: “The forest area here is still quite pristine, with many rare and valuable species of flora and fauna. About a decade ago, the forest area of Thuong Hoa commune was always a ‘hot spot’ for deforestation in the province, especially during Tet (Lunar New Year). Some illegal loggers were very aggressive, using many tricks to resist, escape, and even attack when they realized the forest protection force was thin. But since the Forestry Law was enacted, the inter-agency forest protection force of Thuong Hoa commune was established and put into operation, and almost all the illegal loggers operating in the area have been ‘driven out.’ Thanks to that, the forest has been able to grow and recover quickly in peace…”

Thuong Hoa commune currently has a total natural area of over 35,000 hectares, of which nearly 33,000 hectares are natural forest, with the remainder being planted forests, non-forested areas, and other purposes. The commune currently has several forest owners assigned to manage the forest, including: Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park (21,521.6 hectares); Bac Quang Binh Forestry and Industrial Company Limited (2,098.5 hectares); households (336 hectares); Thuong Hoa Commune People's Committee (8,137 hectares); and local communities (970.6 hectares).

Leading us directly to a patch of ancient forest, where the trunks of trees are so large that it would take two or three adult arms to encircle them, Mr. Thai Xuan Hong, Secretary of the Party Branch and Head of the Community Forest Management Board of Phu Minh village, said: “Since 2015, the village has been entrusted by the State with managing over 800 hectares of community forest and forestry land. Since the forest was handed over to the Phu Minh community, the responsibility of forest protection for the entire village has increased significantly, and the forest cover here has always shown positive growth. Due to a short period without funding (2021-2022), forest management and patrolling were not carried out regularly and were lax in some areas. However, since 2023, thanks to the return of funding, forest patrol and protection activities have been assigned to the entire village on a rotating basis, carried out very responsibly and seriously 24/7; especially during Tet (Lunar New Year), this activity is strongly intensified.” "Moreover, the forest is well protected, and now many rare animal species have reappeared with greater frequency, such as birds, monkeys, langurs, muntjacs, black civets, wild boars... In 2024, the entire village received 571 million VND from forest protection contracts and forest carbon credit payments, which was very encouraging. Now, every person in Phu Minh village sees preserving the forest as preserving their future, their livelihood, and demonstrating responsibility to society and the surrounding environment..."

Mr. Tran Dinh Cuong, Head of the Thuong Hoa Forest Protection Station under the Bac Quang Binh Forestry and Industrial Company Limited, added: "From quite early on, our station proactively advised the company to develop a plan to strengthen forest protection during the Lunar New Year with many key tasks such as deploying sufficient personnel to be on duty 24/7 throughout the assigned forest area; implementing strict 'barricades' at the main forest routes and establishing additional checkpoints at the top of Da Deo Pass to detect and promptly handle violations; and infiltrating and thoroughly understanding the operating patterns of illegal loggers to prevent and combat them more effectively. Currently, the entire station only has 6 officers but is entrusted by the company with the responsibility of managing nearly 3,000 hectares of natural forest, which is a very heavy responsibility." Therefore, the station always recognizes the need to effectively coordinate with functional forces and neighboring forest owners to increase its "eyes and ears," strength, and unity in order to prevent and repel acts of forest encroachment.

Before parting ways, amidst the ancient forest canopy, Mr. Dinh Minh Khuong, a forest ranger at the Thuong Hoa Forest Ranger Station, shared his thoughts: "The traditional Lunar New Year is usually a time for people to gather and enjoy the joyful and warm atmosphere with their families. However, for most of us who work to protect the forest, we all understand that we need to set aside some personal feelings and sacrifice some time to work together to protect the greenness of the forests, which is also a way to show our dedication to the community and society..."
