Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Ngan's steps are somewhat slower but she still maintains her steadfastness, her voice is decisive, her eyes are still bright. Her hair has turned white over the years but her smile is still full of the generosity of a soldier in the past. Mrs. Ngan is simple and reserved, especially when mentioning her contributions to society. However, her living room tells a different story, the achievement boards and certificates are hung neatly and solemnly, proving her persistent efforts, sense of responsibility and never-ending passion.

Born in 1946, when she had just turned 20, Ms. Ngan volunteered to join the resistance war against the US. From 1964, she was a military medic of An Giang Provincial Military Command, taking care of wounded soldiers. 11 years of fighting, 24 years of serving in the army, from a battlefield nurse to a captain, Ms. Ha Thi Ngan lived up to her oath as a soldier of Uncle Ho's army. In 1996, she was awarded the Second Class Resistance Medal by the President.

After the country was completely unified, the former female soldier continued to promote her abilities on the new front. For nearly 14 years holding the position of director at important units such as Thoai Son Food, Thoai Ha Company (An Giang), Ms. Ngan applied her management experience and soldier's discipline to bring the unit to stable development. No matter what position she was in, on the battlefield or in the business world, she still maintained her seriousness, responsibility and dedication.

When she retired, it seemed that she would enjoy her old age, but the veteran's fire of dedication became even stronger. Since 2008, Ms. Ngan has become the "soul" of the Association for the Support of the Disabled, Orphans and Poor Patients of Thoai Son District (before the merger). With her prestige and perseverance, she contributed to raising the association's fund from its initial meager capital to nearly 4 billion VND, after more than 10 years of campaigning.

From that fund, dozens of heart surgeries were supported, some cases up to 100 million VND. Many houses were donated to poor comrades. The volunteer ambulance of the Association for the Support of the Disabled, Orphans and Poor Patients of Thoai Son District, driven by her former comrade for free, became a means of timely assistance for the poor who needed to go to the hospital, not letting anyone stay because of lack of money for the car.

Currently, Ms. Ngan still plays a core role in the Thoai Son Commune Veterans Association. Despite many changes in the organization and her old age, she remains steadfast in the spirit of a soldier and the journey of sharing with the community. “Seeing poor patients have money to buy medicine, successful heart surgeries, and veterans receiving better care and living conditions, I am very happy,” Ms. Ngan shared.

Perhaps it is this happiness that helps Ms. Ngan to ignite her enthusiasm to continue fulfilling her mission as a party member, a soldier in everyday life. Currently, she is also sponsoring two female students with difficult circumstances in the locality, each receiving 2 million VND/school year from her pension.

“Mrs. Ha Thi Ngan is an exemplary veteran, enthusiastic about association work. Despite her old age, she still keeps her passion for social activities. She helps her comrades in difficult circumstances and other less fortunate people with all her sincerity,” said Huynh Tan Duc, Chairman of Thoai Son Commune Veterans Association.
