Landowner Eleazar Villafranca confirmed that the large statue of Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, was vandalized over the weekend.
Elon Musk's statue has been vandalized in many places.
Villafranca said several truck drivers called him to report that the statue had been damaged. When he arrived at the scene, he saw deep cuts on the eyes, chin, and back of the Elon Musk statue. "There were about three or four places that had been cut with a knife," Villafranca said.
The sculpture, featuring the face of the SpaceX founder, was inspired by a pencil portrait posted online six years ago by a user named Watchieboy, which even became a meme at one point.
He said the statue is about 3.6 meters tall and made from a rubber-like material. The artist who created the statue is a friend of Villafranca's who lives in France.
This person hired him to place the statue on their land, and the statue remained there for about a year.
In a previous interview, the artist stated that he is a tech entrepreneur nicknamed "Louis XXII" and a huge fan of Elon Musk.
Villafranca said he had tried to contact the artist to discuss the vandalism, but had not received a response. He added that another artist had agreed to repair the statue.
The landowner also said that authorities had been notified of the incident and had filed a report, but he was unsure whether a suspect had been identified. The Cameron County Sheriff's Office has not responded to ABC News' request for comment.
The wave of opposition to Elon Musk
The incident occurred amid recent attacks targeting Tesla dealerships, Tesla vehicles, and charging stations in numerous cities across the United States, since Elon Musk began his role in President Donald Trump's Department of Government Effectiveness, also known as DOGE.
The Rio Grande Valley area is no exception to this trend. In February, a mural of Musk in downtown Brownsville was vandalized with the words "Deny Defend Depose," accompanied by a symbol spray-painted in black on one of Musk's cheeks.
Two years earlier, in February 2022, a local environmental activist was also accused of vandalizing another mural in downtown Brownsville, spray-painting messages demanding that SpaceX cease operations.
