The cost of producing large-sized OLED displays is rapidly decreasing, opening up opportunities for direct competition with LCD TVs in the coming years.

According to industry sources, the production cost of LG Display's 65-inch OLED panel has nearly halved in five years. In 2020, the price was around $1,000 . By 2023, this figure had dropped to $600 and is expected to fall below $500 by the end of this year. This downward trend is projected to continue into 2026.

This shift is linked to LG Display's aggressive expansion of its production lines and cost optimization. Factories in Paju (South Korea) and Guangzhou (China) play a key role. In particular, in Guangzhou, two-thirds of the investment costs have been depreciated, significantly reducing the production cost per panel.

According to Biz Chosun, citing an industry official, LG Display has focused on increasing capacity and stabilizing production over the past two to three years to shift its revenue structure towards OLED. This effort has yielded noticeable results since last year, resulting in a 30% cost reduction compared to 2023. The company also aims to further lower costs in 2026 through design improvements and changes to the display driver chip (DDI) architecture.

Although the price reduction may not be directly reflected in the selling price, as LG Display is still struggling with profitability, the large-screen OLED TV market has shown positive signs. The prices of some 77-inch and 83-inch models this year have cooled down significantly compared to before.

Notably, the production cost of OLED panels is now approaching, or potentially even lower than, that of LCD panels using RGB LED backlight technology. An industry source indicates that the cost of the LED chip alone accounts for a significant portion of the panel's price. Including the backlight system and driver, the estimated production cost is around $400–$600 , comparable to or even higher than OLED panels.
