Billionaire Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has unveiled an updated Grok-3 model, showcasing a version of chatbot technology that the Tesla CEO proudly claims is "the smartest AI on Earth."
In mathematical, scientific, and coding benchmarks, Grok-3 outperformed Alphabet's Google Gemini, DeepSeek's V3 model, Anthropic's Claude, and OpenAI's GPT-4o, xAI representatives said during today's (Vietnam time) live stream. Grok-3 has "more than 10 times" the computing power of its predecessor and completed pre-training in early January, billionaire Musk said in a presentation with three xAI engineers.
Billionaire Elon Musk launches Grok-3 AI chatbot to compete with OpenAI and DeepSeek.
"We are constantly improving the models every day, and literally within 24 hours you will see improvements," Musk stated.
XAI has introduced a new intelligent search tool with Grok-3, called DeepSearch. DeepSearch is a reasoning chatbot that demonstrates the process of understanding queries and planning responses. The demo showed that it includes options for research, brainstorming, and data analysis.
Grok-3 is rolling out to Premium+ subscribers on the X social media platform immediately. The company is launching a new subscription package called SuperGrok for the Grok mobile app and Grok.com website.
The new chatbot appears to put Grok ahead of OpenAI's latest ChatGPT and intensify the already fierce competition between the two companies. Musk launched xAI in 2023 as an alternative to OpenAI, a company he has publicly criticized for its restructuring plans to become a for-profit enterprise.
Tesla CEO Musk has filed lawsuits against OpenAI twice, alleging violations of founding principles and a $97.4 billion bid to acquire the non-profit branch of OpenAI, which was rejected last week. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman accused Musk's offer of being a tactic to "slow us down." Musk was involved in the founding of OpenAI but has been a fierce critic of the company since leaving its board in 2018.
Major AI companies like OpenAI and xAI have raised capital at a rapid pace, with their valuations soaring. According to reports, Musk's xAI is in negotiations to raise approximately $10 billion in a funding round that would value the company at around $75 billion. The company was last valued at around $51 billion. Meanwhile, OpenAI is in negotiations to raise up to $40 billion in a funding round that would push its valuation to $300 billion.
These companies are also capital-intensive. SoftBank Group, OpenAI, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi-backed MGX jointly announced a program in January to deploy $100 billion, with an ultimate goal of spending $500 billion, to build data centers and other AI infrastructure in the U.S. Dell Technologies is in the advanced stages of securing a deal worth over $5 billion to supply xAI with AI-optimized servers.
However, emerging rival technologies could challenge this model and create opportunities for new competitors to emerge. Last month, Chinese AI company DeepSeek released a new open-source AI model, called R1, that matches or beats leading US competitors across a range of industry benchmarks. DeepSeek claims to have built this model at a fraction of the cost of its US competitors.
