Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the explosions occurred in the capital's central Podil district and that no further details were available.
Meanwhile, the South African Presidency announced on Twitter: “South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and other African heads of state are participating in the African Leaders Peace Mission at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Bucha,” near the capital Kiev. The delegation, which includes the leaders of South Africa, Senegal, Comoros and Egypt, is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on June 17.
In a related development, on the same day, the Kremlin affirmed that President Putin is still ready to receive any contact to discuss a solution to the Ukraine conflict.
The comments came ahead of a new peace initiative proposed by the African delegation to Putin. According to a draft document seen by Reuters, the proposal would include a series of “confidence-building measures” in the mediation efforts. These include the withdrawal of Russian troops, the removal of tactical nuclear weapons from Belarus, the suspension of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Putin and the lifting of sanctions. The document states that the mission’s aim is to “emphasize the importance of peace and encourage the parties to agree to a negotiation process based on diplomacy .”
