In a post on his personal page late on September 15th, the former Barcelona and France national team center-back wrote: "After a career full of ups and downs, it's time to say goodbye. I've given my all with passion and have no regrets."
Umtiti began his career at Lyon, making 170 appearances before joining Barcelona in 2016 at the age of 22. In 2018, Umtiti was considered one of the best central defenders in the world . But from that glory, things quickly went downhill. After the 2018 World Cup, he didn't have a single season where he played more than 18 games for Barcelona.
In the summer of 2022, Umtiti joined Lecce on loan, before his contract was terminated prematurely. A year later, the player born in 1993 left Barcelona and joined Lille on a free transfer. However, he only played 13 matches in the past two years before facing unemployment in the summer of 2025.
Umtiti has 31 caps for the French national team, playing a key role alongside Raphael Varane in their 2018 World Cup victory. He also scored the only goal in the 1-0 win against Belgium in the semi-finals and played in all six of France's matches at the tournament in Russia.
During his seven years with Barcelona, Umtiti made a total of 133 appearances, winning seven major titles, including two consecutive La Liga championships. However, since the 2017/18 season, knee injuries have caused Umtiti considerable pain, limiting his playing time to a limited level.
