Umtiti retires

Samuel Umtiti officially announced his retirement at the age of 31, ending a glorious but bitter career.

In a post on his personal page late on September 15, the former Barcelona and France midfielder wrote: "After a career full of ups and downs, it's time to say goodbye. I have dedicated myself with passion and have no regrets."

Umtiti started his career at Lyon and made 170 appearances before joining Barcelona in 2016 at the age of 22. In 2018, Umtiti was considered one of the best central defenders in the world . But from that halo, everything quickly went downhill. After the 2018 World Cup, he did not have a season in which he played more than 18 games for Barcelona.

In the summer of 2022, Umtiti joined Lecce on loan, before the contract was terminated early. A year later, the player born in 1993 said goodbye to Barcelona and joined Lille as a free agent. However, he only played 13 matches in the past 2 years before becoming unemployed in the summer of 2025.

Umtiti has 31 caps for France, playing a key role alongside Raphael Varane in their 2018 World Cup triumph. He also scored the only goal in the 1-0 semi-final win over Belgium, and played in all six of France's matches at the tournament in Russia.

During his 7 years with Barcelona, ​​Umtiti played a total of 133 times, winning 7 major titles, including 2 consecutive La Liga championships. However, since the 2017/18 season, a knee injury has caused Umtiti to suffer a lot of pain and only play at a limited level.
