(CLO) If you need to access a computer remotely while traveling or working remotely, you will now have to use Windows Apps – an alternative to Remote Desktop on Windows.
The Remote Desktop application used to be one of the simplest ways to remotely connect to a personal computer, allowing users to access and even perform some basic file transfer operations. However, since the October 2024 update of Windows 11, the application has encountered numerous problems.

In September 2024, Microsoft began integrating several remote connectivity services into Windows Apps – a new application aimed at providing a unified remote control solution for users on PCs and mobile devices. After completing the user migration to Windows Apps, Microsoft announced it would discontinue support for the Remote Desktop application.
In its latest statement, Microsoft said: "Starting May 27, 2025, the Remote Desktop app on the Microsoft Store will no longer be supported or available for download and installation. Users need to switch to Windows Apps to continue accessing Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box."
The transition from Remote Desktop to Windows Apps has a few points to note. If you are currently using Remote Desktop Connection, you will need to continue using it until the same functionality is integrated into Windows Apps.
If you are using Remote Desktop Services, use RemoteApp & Desktop Connection until Windows Apps support this type of connection.
Microsoft's removal of Remote Desktop is part of a strategy to optimize remote connectivity services and enhance security, while encouraging users to switch to a new platform with more integrated features.
The decision to remove Remote Desktop may impact some businesses and individuals who rely on the application. However, according to tech experts, this move allows Microsoft to focus on developing a more modern and secure remote control platform.
Before Microsoft, many major tech companies had already made similar changes. Google discontinued support for the traditional Chrome Remote Desktop application in favor of a web version. Apple is also upgrading its remote control features on macOS to better compete.
Although the change may cause some initial inconvenience, in the long run, users will benefit from a more secure and efficient remote connectivity ecosystem.
