The dream of literacy at the mountaintop.

A bowl of rice, a letter

Home to the Hmong ethnic minority, the villages of Lung Ac and Tong Kim are perched precariously on the cliffs of the towering Lung Ac mountain. These two villages were once impoverished areas of Vinh Yen commune for many years. With nearly 100 households, the Hmong people here toil year-round to make a living. In the past, during lean seasons, they had to subsist on corn and cornmeal porridge. In recent years, thanks to the attention of local authorities and changes in the mindset and practices of the people, life has improved. Their granaries are full of rice and corn, their buffalo and horses are increasing, and the appearance of the area is gradually changing.

During times of poverty, the people of Lung Ac and Tong Kim only thought about how to fill their stomachs and have decent clothes; no one considered education or sending their children to school. Therefore, children, once they held a throwing knife or a hoe, had to go to the fields to produce as much rice and corn as possible to fill their stomachs during those long, agonizing years of hunger. Consequently, these children were only skilled at working in the fields, wading through streams, and riding horses; they were incapable of reading or writing. For many years, the majority of children were illiterate.

Through repeated campaigns, persuasion, and especially the perseverance of the village teachers, the people of Tong Kim and Lung Ac have gradually changed their mindset and recognized the role of literacy in transforming their lives. At village meetings, the topic of sending children to school is always a hot topic and is discussed enthusiastically by the villagers. Some families worried about how children could learn to read and write if they didn't have enough to eat; how they could get to school if their homes were too far; and what kind of work they would do after school. But gradually, these difficulties were overcome by a determined will. The movement to send children to school in the Lung Ac mountain peak began when the people developed that determination.

Descending the mountain to learn to read and write.

To meet the needs and provide educational opportunities for the children of Tong Kim and Lung Ac villages, Vinh Yen commune mobilized the people to build a classroom right in Tong Kim. Thus, a branch of the primary and kindergarten school was established in the village. With classrooms and a school, there was no reason not to go to school. 100% of children of school age now attend school to learn to read and write. Teacher Ly Gin Phu, a native of Tong Kim, is in charge of the classroom in the village. Every day, students diligently descend the mountain slopes from the top of Lung Ac to attend school, never missing a single session, and then more than a dozen primary school students from the Tong Kim valley climb the mountain slopes to get to school.

Mr. Sung Seo Chu, head of Lung Ac village, said: "Both Tong Kim and Lung Ac villages have nearly 100 students of school age. Not only do they continue their education at the primary level, but these students also overcome difficulties to pursue higher education, going from primary school to secondary school, then high school, and finally university. When they reach secondary school, most of them board at the school. Thanks to the school's support in building boarding facilities for the students, they have the necessary living conditions to study."

However, not every Hmong family in the village has the means to send their children to high school. The school is more than ten kilometers away from home, and living and transportation conditions are very difficult. In the past, at this age, children had to go to the mountains to work in the fields to help their families. Overcoming these difficulties, more than 20 students from the two villages packed their bags and went to school to live and study. Despite the long distance and their families' poverty, they persevered in attending school. On weekends, groups of students return to visit their villages, and on Monday mornings, they descend the mountain slopes, eagerly carrying bags of rice, bundles of wild vegetables, and firewood. All of these things represent the dreams they have for the future.

Examples of studious individuals

In the arduous journey of seeking education in Lung Ac, there have always been exemplary students who bring honor to their village and form the core of life's transformation here. Born and raised in a poor family with four siblings, both parents being farmers, the two brothers Sung Minh Thanh and Sung Dung Benh in Lung Ac village ignited a desire to learn from the moment they started school. Despite their poverty and hardships, their determination to study remained unwavering. Having been accepted to study at the Provincial Ethnic Boarding High School and Bao Yen No. 1 High School, far from home, the two brothers always encouraged each other to study diligently, determined to pass the university entrance exams. After graduating from high school, both brothers successfully passed the entrance exams to the Public Security Academy and Thai Nguyen University of Education.

Mr. Ly A Pao's family in Tong Kim village has three sons, all of whom have received a full education. Two of his sons have gone to university; his eldest son became a high school teacher right here in Nghia Do; his second son is studying at Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry; and his third son is preparing to attend university. Mr. Pao said that in previous years, the high school was 40 kilometers from his house, and despite his difficult family circumstances, he still provided opportunities for his sons to study and grow.

Bidding farewell to Tong Kim and Lung Ac villages as the sun was setting behind the towering Lung Ac mountain, we looked back and saw the mountain slopes, shaped like open pages, bathed in the afternoon sunlight. In the distance, the sound of the Hmong flute echoed a song about learning in this place.
