Particularly in markets such as the US, Japan, and the UK, lychees have sometimes been sold for around 800,000 VND/kg.
In mid-June, lychees ripen to a vibrant red across the orchards and hillsides of Hai Duong, Bac Giang, Hung Yen, and other provinces. With an estimated national production of around 370,000 tons, lychees are transported by trucks and containers throughout the country, reaching markets, supermarket shelves, and even by plane and ship to many countries and territories around the world .
On June 20th, the first shipment of fresh lychees from Bac Giang province in 2023 arrived in Houston, Texas, via air freight. Immediately afterwards, Vietnamese fresh lychees were sold simultaneously at many of the largest Asian supermarkets and markets in Houston, Texas, including major retailers such as Hong Kong, Tan Binh, Viet Hoa, Linda's Tropical Fruits, Ca Mau, and others.
The retail price for customers is $14-15 per pound (approximately 780,000 VND per kg); or $140 for an 11-pound (5kg) package, equivalent to 3.2 million VND (640,000 VND/kg).

Previously, Vietnamese lychees were imported to the US as frozen goods. Since 2020, the Vietnamese Trade Office in the US has recognized the demand for fresh lychees and has connected importers and exporters from both countries to work with the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to understand the procedures for exporting fresh lychees.
At the end of May, the head of the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) announced that APHIS had recognized another factory as qualified to irradiate fresh Vietnamese fruit for export to the US, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese fresh lychees to enter this market.
Ms. Jolie Nguyen, CEO of LNS International Corporation (a lychee importer), said that LNS will continue to cooperate with import, distribution, and transportation partners to bring Vietnamese agricultural products (including fresh lychees) to many states in the US this month. This encourages American consumers and enhances the reputation of Vietnamese businesses worldwide.
In early June, a shipment of Vietnamese pink silk was also imported into the UK by TT Meridian Company, becoming the first official export shipment of Vietnamese silk to the UK this year.
Compared to similar products and other imported fruits, Vietnamese lychees are quite expensive in the UK, priced at 15 pounds per kilogram, equivalent to 435,000 VND.
In mid-June, Ho Guom - Song Am High-Tech Agriculture Co., Ltd. (Ho Guom Group) exported seedless lychees to the Japanese and British markets. According to surveys, in the Japanese market, seedless lychees are currently selling for 4,500-5,000 Yen/kg (750,000-840,000 VND/kg).

According to Mr. Huynh Tan Dat, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department, 17 shipments, totaling over 82 tons of lychees, have received certification for export to Japan.
The retail price of lychees at Japanese supermarket chains ranges from 400,000 to 550,000 VND per kilogram.
Earlier, on June 15th, the Vietnam Trade Office in Japan, in coordination with several businesses, brought nearly 30 businesspeople and representatives from Japanese companies to Hai Duong and Bac Giang provinces to survey lychee growing areas and plan for purchasing and exporting the fruit.
Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ameii Vietnam JSC, also stated that the company is busy preparing export orders for lychees to Japan, Germany, the UK, the Middle East, and other countries. In the Japanese market, the company expects to export approximately 30-50% more lychees this year compared to the same period last year. In addition, durian exports to Japan are also showing good growth.
Exports of lychees to Japan in 2023 will experience positive growth, with businesses receiving more orders than in previous years, predicted Mr. Huynh Tan Dat.
In 2022, in addition to serving domestic consumption needs, Vietnamese lychees were exported to the traditional Chinese market and more than 30 countries and territories worldwide, meeting the demands of the most high-end markets. As a result, lychee farmers in Vietnam earned nearly ten trillion VND. Vietnamese lychees also escaped the recurring problem of "bumper harvests leading to falling prices".
