From the home front to half the family's breadwinner
Looking back at the past, the image of women was often associated with the kitchen, the fields, and primarily with domestic roles, with the main source of income largely coming from men. However, with industrialization, modernization, and international integration, women's employment opportunities have become increasingly diverse. They participate in many fields, from agriculture and industry to services and business.
In rural areas, many women not only farm but also utilize their free time for livestock raising, small-scale trading, and participation in social organizations. In urban areas, many women work full-time in political and social organizations but still manage to do online business to increase their family income. This flexibility stems not only from economic needs but also from a sense of responsibility.
With the rising cost of living, it's difficult for a single person's income to ensure a stable life, making the role of female labor increasingly essential in contributing to increased income and improved family life. "Besides helping my husband with farming, I take advantage of my free time to weave baskets to earn extra income. Thanks to that, I don't have to worry so much about daily living expenses," shared Mrs. Tran Thi Duyen, a resident of Vinh Thuan commune.
Many women have become primary breadwinners with decent incomes. Ms. Thi Xa Ral, residing in Vinh Phong commune, shared: “Since starting my food processing and water hyacinth weaving business, I earn more than 10 million VND per month. Not only do I have a stable income, but I also feel more confident and have a stronger voice in my family.”
Today, in modern families, the expectation is no longer that the man is the sole breadwinner; women play an equally important role. Furthermore, job opportunities for women are more diverse than before. The development of technology and services has opened up many more options for women to access a wider range of employment.
Practical support policies are needed.
Despite their increasingly important role, female workers still face many obstacles. One of the biggest difficulties is accessing capital, vocational skills, and stable employment opportunities. Especially in rural areas, many women lack stable employment and have precarious incomes... "My job is unstable; I only work when there's work available, otherwise I'm unemployed. My income is very uncertain, and I often worry about the future," shared Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen, a resident of Vinh Binh commune.
To maximize the role of women in the family economy, practical and long-term support policies are needed. First, it is necessary to create conditions for women to access preferential loan sources for starting businesses. With suitable capital, they can confidently invest in production, livestock farming, or develop household economic models to increase income and improve their lives.
Vocational training and skills development need to be prioritized. In addition to traditional occupations, women need access to new skills relevant to market trends, such as e-commerce and digital skills, to enhance their capabilities and competitiveness. "In the context of the ongoing digital transformation, equipping women with digital skills will help them expand their job opportunities, access broader markets, and increase their competitiveness," said Ms. Thi Kim Thuy, a resident of Vinh Phong commune.
Women workers are not only the home front but have become half the economic pillars of their families. Their contributions not only bring economic value but also help build a more progressive and equal society. Gender equality needs to be demonstrated through concrete actions within each family and community. Therefore, appropriate policies and the concerted efforts of society, reaching every family, are needed to create the best conditions for women to develop and assert their roles.
