Van Ho District has a large livestock population, with nearly 41,000 animals, including over 33,000 buffaloes and cows. Since the beginning of the year, 114 buffaloes and cows have been infected with foot-and-mouth disease in three communes: Xuan Nha, Long Luong, and Chieng Xuan; lumpy skin disease has occurred in Xuan Nha and Tan Xuan communes, with 6 cows infected, 3 of which died.
Immediately after detection, Van Ho district declared an outbreak and directed specialized agencies to form working groups, in coordination with the People's Committees of the communes, to cordon off the affected areas, handle the outbreaks; investigate, collect samples, guide the spraying of disinfectants, and destroy infected animals. They also organized inspections to prevent the transportation of livestock and livestock products of unknown origin into and out of the area. They reviewed newly emerging herds, guided people on cleaning livestock pens, and ensured full vaccination according to regulations.
Ms. Mui Thi Lien, Deputy Director of the Van Ho District Agricultural Services Center, said: The unit has coordinated with the People's Committees of the communes to manage and isolate sick livestock, care for and treat the sick animals. At the same time, they have compiled statistics on the number of sick livestock and destroyed them according to regulations. In April, the Center received 420 liters of chemicals and 8,000 doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine, distributing them to communes with outbreaks for disinfection and sterilization; and organized vaccination for livestock.

In Xuan Nha commune, there are over 3,300 buffaloes and cows. In the first quarter, 18 cows in Na An and Thin villages contracted foot-and-mouth disease. Immediately after detection, the commune organized inspections and reported to the District People's Committee, taking samples for testing. Veterinary officers were instructed to guide the people in monitoring and isolating sick livestock; 150 liters of disinfectant were sprayed in the affected areas.
Mr. Vi Van Gioi, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan Nha commune, informed: The commune has been allocated 3,150 doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine and has administered 95% of the allocated vaccine to the buffalo and cattle herds. To date, all affected livestock have recovered, and the commune has been declared free of the disease. Not being complacent, the commune continues to strengthen propaganda and guidance for livestock farmers on disease prevention and control measures; focusing on hygiene, spreading lime powder, and spraying disinfectant in barns; and implementing a proper nutritional regime for livestock to improve their resistance.
The commercial pig farming model of Mr. Quàng Văn Hiến's household in Nà Noong village generates billions of dong in income.
Mr. Dinh Cong Thoan, from Na Hieng village, Xuan Nha commune, shared: "My family raises 6 cows. Thanks to the awareness campaigns from the district and commune, I proactively built barns to keep the livestock and ensured they received all necessary vaccinations, while also focusing on maintaining environmental hygiene. As a result, the herd of cows is thriving."
The specialized agencies of Van Ho district also coordinated with local authorities to promote the dissemination of information to the people about techniques for restocking livestock; organized two training courses on disease prevention and control in livestock and poultry for nearly 200 people in Long Luong and Chieng Xuan communes. They guided the people on maintaining environmental hygiene, properly handling livestock waste, and not using banned substances in animal husbandry. To date, 100% of the communes where outbreaks were detected have been declared free of the disease.
To develop sustainable livestock farming, Van Ho district continues to strengthen disease prevention and control measures, minimizing losses for livestock farmers; focusing on vaccination and environmental hygiene in livestock farming, ensuring stable livestock development, and contributing to increased income for the people.
