Books have always been considered a vast treasure trove of human knowledge. Maintaining a daily reading habit is the fastest way for people to acquire information and enhance their understanding. However, with the development of technology, many people have shifted their reading habits to searching for information on the internet.
The digital reading room at Thanh Hoa Provincial Library always attracts the attention of readers.
Nowadays, many people are accustomed to using social media and reading information on technological devices instead of reading books. Mr. Ngo Ngoc Duong from Dong Tho ward (Thanh Hoa City) shared: "Due to the nature of my work, I rarely have time to read books or newspapers. I only take advantage of my free time to read information on my mobile phone or listen to radio and podcasts to update information, which is convenient and provides rich and diverse information."
However, despite the advantages of e-books, traditional reading remains a cultural practice preserved by many families. Ms. Le Ngoc Van from Truong Thi ward (Thanh Hoa City) shared: "Because my children are still young and cannot distinguish between correct, incorrect, harmful, or useful information from the internet, I limit their use of social media and technology. Instead, our family makes it a habit to go to bookstores together to choose books for our children whenever we have free time, or older children can independently research books they want to buy online and then ask for my opinion on purchasing them online. I believe that building a reading habit for children not only helps them gain useful knowledge but also cultivates perseverance and discipline."
To contribute to building a reading culture in the community, Thanh Hoa Provincial Library has focused on developing grassroots reading culture by providing mobile library services and circulating books and newspapers to schools, prisons, border guard posts, and remote areas. The unit also regularly organizes book promotion and introduction contests, the Reading Culture Ambassador contest, and collaborates in organizing book reading festivals to promote awareness of the role, position, and importance of books in social life, honoring readers and those involved in collecting, creating, publishing, and distributing books.
Besides maintaining and organizing the use of books, to keep pace with the digital trend and better serve the needs of readers, the Provincial Library has also opened a computer room and promoted the digital transformation of the library... Mr. Le Hai Nam, Head of the Information Technology Department (Provincial Library) said: "The library has equipped 80 computer sets, strengthening facilities and equipment to ensure readers have the best conditions for learning and research. In addition, we regularly disseminate and update the catalog of new books on the website and fanpage... Recognizing that innovation in library activities is a top priority for developing a reading culture, the organization and operation of the library are constantly researched to innovate and create... Every week, library staff will select good and meaningful books to introduce to students and guide them on effective reading methods."
In addition, the Provincial Library has successfully digitized all its documents into a catalog format. This ensures that readers can find documents anytime, anywhere at thuvientinhthanhoa.vn. In the future, the library will strongly promote the digitization of full-text documents and catalog the digitized documents onto the ilib 8.0 electronic library software; and upgrade the ilib software with more intelligent features.
Along with the development of reading culture in the 4.0 era and the development of digital libraries, the development of traditional reading culture still needs to be maintained as a beautiful cultural aspect in the community. Therefore, in addition to the efforts of all levels and sectors, each person, especially the younger generation, needs to maintain the habit of reading books to enhance knowledge, cultivate thinking skills, and develop personal skills...
