Da Nang literature before the new era

Continuing the tradition of studiousness and literature of the "Five Phoenixes Soaring Together" land of Quang Nam and Da Nang, the city's literary creative team is constantly growing and producing many high-quality literary and artistic works, meeting the needs of readers and contributing to the development of literature and art in the city.

City literature is constantly developing.

Over the past 50 years, Da Nang 's literature and art have produced many outstanding and valuable works of art, rich in content, thought, and artistic quality, in line with national cultural identity and the city's cultural characteristics, meeting the spiritual needs of the people. To date, there are 113 writers from generations before and after 1975, especially the veteran writers with rich writing experience from the war and the dynamic and enthusiastic young writers after 1986, who are passionate and find happiness in their literary creations.

Looking back at the literary creative journey of Da Nang writers after 1975, poet Nguyen Kim Huy, Chairman of the City Writers' Association, said that over the past 50 years, many authors who are members of the City Writers' Association have continuously published works for readers near and far every year with widespread influence and have been awarded many international and national literary prizes. Notable names recognized by readers include: Phan Tu, Hoang Chau Ky, Thu Bon ( Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts); Luu Trung Duong, Thai Ba Loi, Thanh Que (State Prize for Literature and Arts); Vinh Quyen (ASEAN Literature Prize 2021)...

Works of literary value that have been highly appreciated by readers and have received international awards (ASEAN Literature, Mekong River Literature), national awards (Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, Vietnam Writers Association, Central Council for Literary and Artistic Criticism; periodic 5-year and annual literary and artistic awards of provinces and cities…) and city awards (periodic 5-year literary and artistic awards of the City People's Committee, annual awards of the Union of Literature and Arts Associations of the city and the City Writers Association) by authors who are members of the Da Nang Writers Association are compiled and introduced quite extensively in the anthology “Da Nang Writers Association - Award-winning works 2001-2021” (Da Nang Publishing House, 2022).

Each year, 10 to 18 literary and poetic works by members are published and introduced, many of which are widely received and highly appreciated by readers. Particularly noteworthy is the consistent and persistent creativity of young authors such as Le Hang, Vu Ngoc Giao, Tran Ngoc Duc, Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, Truong Thi Bach My, Le Hai Ky, and Tran Thien Huong, whose works clearly reflect the spirit and vitality of the new era.

Poet Thanh Que believes that, with an increasingly large number of writers and the emergence of many literary works, including high-quality ones, Da Nang writers have left their mark on the map of Vietnamese literature. From within the literary creation, research, and criticism movement in Da Nang, talented writers have emerged, been admitted to the Vietnam Writers Association, and contributed to the development of the main creative force of the national literature.

Aiming for works that reflect the spirit of the times.

Dr. Doan Thanh No, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, stated that over the past 50 years of accompanying the national literature and arts scene, Da Nang's artists and writers have left their mark through many outstanding works, possessing profound content, ideology, artistic, and aesthetic value. These works not only reflect vibrant reality but also enrich the national cultural and artistic heritage, contributing to affirming the position of Vietnamese literature and art on the international stage.

The literary and artistic works of the city's artists and writers reflect relatively comprehensively the city's and the country's renewal and development, affirming new factors and exemplary figures, criticizing evil and wrongdoing, and arousing and promoting the good historical and traditional values of Da Nang's homeland, country, and people. Specifically, there are works, pieces, and authors that have received outstanding awards over the past 50 years, such as: the Ho Chi Minh Prize, the State Prize for Literature and Arts; the Mekong River Literature Prize...

However, in reality, most writers in Da Nang currently write as a side job. The majority are tied to stable jobs that support themselves and their families, such as journalists, doctors, teachers, and business owners. Only upon retirement do these writers leave their jobs to dedicate themselves entirely to writing, becoming full-time, professional writers. Therefore, to guide these writers towards becoming professional writers, the city needs short-term and long-term programs and plans to invest in, develop, and train professional writers. Only with professional writers can there be hope for the emergence of great works that reflect the spirit of the times and the modern life for future generations.

"To create great works, each writer must not only dedicate themselves to pursuing a clear, correct, and innovative literary ideal, expressing it strongly and consistently throughout every page they write, but also invest time and effort into their work professionally," shared writer Nguyen Kim Huy.

Resolution No. 43-NQ/TW of the Politburo (12th term) on building and developing Da Nang city until 2030, with a vision to 2045, identifies the construction and development of Da Nang city as one of the country's cultural and sports centers; a center for organizing regional and international events. To successfully achieve the goals set out in Resolution No. 43-NQ/TW, the Union of Literature and Arts Associations and the city's artists and writers play a crucial role and have a responsibility.

Besides promoting creative activities and the dissemination of works rich in humanistic values and deeply educating about national traditions, historical and revolutionary traditions, writers need to create works that truthfully reflect social life and practically serve the cause of building culture and people in Da Nang. Only then will the literary creation movement make new strides with works that reflect the spirit of the times and the remarkable development of the city.
