- In recent times, the People's Committee of Van Lang commune and local residents have exploited the advantages of the water surface to develop cage fish farming. However, due to the small scale, unstable output, and lack of consumption linkages, expanding the model still faces many difficulties.
In Van Lang commune, the Thac Xang hydroelectric reservoir boasts a large surface area and stable water environment, making it very favorable for developing cage fish farming. Taking advantage of this, since 2016, local people have proactively invested in cages to raise several types of fish such as grass carp, catfish, and snakehead fish. However, at that time, people mainly practiced extensive farming, utilizing available resources without following proper technical procedures, leading to low survival rates and low productivity.

In light of this situation, specialized agencies and local authorities have focused on implementing several projects to support the development of cage fish farming. For example, in 2021, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in coordination with the Commune People's Committee, implemented a model applying scientific and technical methods to raise snakehead fish in cages on a scale of 800 m3; in 2024, using funds from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, the Commune People's Committee implemented a project to raise catfish in cages on a scale of 800 m3.
However, the cage fish farming model in the commune has not developed as expected so far. While at the beginning of 2025, the entire commune had 55 cages, the number has now decreased significantly, with only 42 cages belonging to 13 households and 1 cooperative.
Mr. Luan Van Bay, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Thac Xang Aquaculture Cooperative, said: The cooperative was established in 2017 with 11 members. While in 2018-2019, the entire cooperative had 67 fish cages, currently only about 30 cages with 7 members are still maintaining farming. The reason for the decrease in the number of cages is due to storms damaging and losing marketable fish. In addition, the cooperative has not yet established a sales link, so the output is not stable.
Not only the Thac Xang Aquaculture Cooperative, but many households also face difficulties in developing cage fish farming models. Mr. Hoang Van Manh, from Hat Loc village, said: "My family started raising fish in 2018 with 4 cages. By 2020, we expanded to 7 cages. However, selling commercial fish has been difficult due to the lack of a stable market and distribution links. My family mainly sells retail at local markets, with only a small amount sold to restaurants, so the sales volume to the market is low, about 1 ton/year. In addition, in 2025, due to the impact of storms, many cages were damaged, causing significant losses. From 7 cages, my family now only maintains 2."
Sharing her thoughts on this issue, Ms. Nong Thuy Linh, Head of the Economic Department of Van Lang Commune, said: The development of cage fish farming in the area is facing certain difficulties regarding market access. The main reasons are that farmers are farming spontaneously and on a small scale, without establishing consumption linkages; in addition, some support projects have not included signed agreements for guaranteed purchase or projected product output… Based on this reality, in the coming time, the department will continue to advise the Commune People's Committee to implement measures to overcome these difficulties, including, in the short term, reorganizing the Thac Xang Aquaculture Cooperative to strengthen the linkages between farming households, gradually orienting the development of the model towards a more concentrated and sustainable direction; seeking and connecting with purchasing units to gradually stabilize output; supporting and encouraging people to research and diversify products from cage fish… Through this, the cage fish farming model will be developed in a sustainable direction.
The potential and economic value of cage fish farming are enormous. However, for this model to develop and expand, in addition to supporting the transfer of scientific and technical knowledge, comprehensive solutions are needed to link product consumption and ensure stable outlets. When these "bottlenecks" are gradually removed, cage fish farming can develop sustainably, thereby helping people feel secure in their production and increase their income.
