Apple confirms it put restrictions on Apple Intelligence to entice users to buy iPhone 15 Pro
John Giannandrea, Apple's senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, explained that running large language models (LLMs) requires a lot of computing power, so the devices running LLMs need to be fast and powerful enough to handle it. He admitted that in theory, older devices could run these models, but the processing speed would be so slow that it would no longer be useful.
With this explanation, many people think that Apple Intelligence will be an excuse for Apple to sell new devices, specifically to boost sales of the iPhone 15 Pro. However, the company's marketing director Greg Joswiak dismissed the suspicion and said that if it wanted to, the company could also limit recent iPad and Mac models.
Apple Intelligence brings a range of features to the devices it supports, with some upcoming features like Writing Tools that give AI the ability to rewrite content; Genmoji that uses generative AI to create new emojis based on user-provided text descriptions, and improvements to Siri.
