Why are archaeologists afraid of 'chicken eggs' when excavating ancient tombs?

Archeology helps people uncover the mysteries of the past. The main thing to do in the field of archeology is to excavate and protect ancient sites and monuments.

While excavating ancient tombs dating back hundreds, even thousands of years, archaeologists face many risks. In particular, many cultural relics will be destroyed to varying degrees, due to age and influence from the surrounding environment.

However, in the process of excavating ancient tombs, the thing that makes both grave robbers and archaeologists most afraid of clashes. Those are chicken eggs.

In fact, in previous excavations, some archaeologists discovered chicken eggs in ancient tombs. The discovery of chicken eggs in ancient tombs made early experts very happy because they could provide a lot of valuable information about the development of the livestock industry of the ancients.

Chicken eggs are an indispensable ingredient in every family today, and also an important source of food in daily meals. The nutritional value of chicken eggs is also very high and reasonably priced for people's consumption.

However, in the past, chicken eggs were a luxury for many families. Even if they raise chickens to lay eggs, poor families also choose to sell them. Therefore, chicken eggs rarely appear in the graves of ordinary people.

Researchers say that in ancient times, only a few rich and powerful people used chicken eggs as burial objects when they died.

Therefore, during the excavation process, if chicken eggs are discovered in the relic, it proves that the identity of the owner of the tomb is also relatively prominent, even rich. If the tomb was not attacked by tomb robbers, it is likely that experts will find valuable cultural relics in these tombs.

The process of excavating ancient tombs is often not easy.

In fact, the number of chicken eggs found in ancient tombs is not one or two. Instead, there are many eggs stored in a large jar or vase. It is noteworthy that this jar was sealed.

So, why are archaeologists afraid to find chicken eggs in ancient tombs?

It turns out that the archaeologists' fear stemmed from a real incident. Accordingly, Chinese archaeologists first discovered chicken eggs buried in an ancient tomb from the Western Zhou period in Jiangsu province (China). In addition to more than 300 cultural relics found, experts were surprised to discover the egg vase.

This vase is more than 2.800 years old, which means it is a priceless treasure.

Although the tombs of the ancients often used protective measures, sealing to prevent intrusion, over thousands of years, bacteria and air still penetrated into the grave.

Eggshells have been calcified for a long time, and the yolks and whites inside are also damaged. However, if no external force is applied, the egg will temporarily retain its shape.

However, at that time, an expert accidentally broke the egg by lightly touching it with his hand. Unexpectedly, the egg immediately crumbled. This also causes irreparable damage to antiquities dating back thousands of years.

In August 8, archaeologists also found a jar of chicken eggs at a site in Guizhou. This time, archaeologists have deeply learned from the previous incident. They used a soft-bristled brush to dust the outside of the eggshell, instead of touching it.

However, as soon as the brush brushed the egg, the eggshell cracked and damaged right in front of the archaeologists.

Archaeologists were scared when they found chicken eggs in an ancient tomb.

Since then, if a chicken egg is discovered in an ancient tomb, archaeologists have not dared to touch it arbitrarily. Moreover, for this fragile artifact, experts also face many difficulties to excavate intact.

On the other hand, when eggs are broken in an ancient tomb, it can also emit a stench, disrupt the stable environment in the grave, make excavation work impossible to continue, or cause artifacts and relics to be no longer intact.

Therefore, to ensure the safety of themselves and the artifacts, archaeologists will take the whole egg jar out of the coffin and soak them in a special solution to take out of the ancient tomb. These eggs are then carefully studied in a laboratory with X-rays.

Despite being scared to find chicken eggs in an ancient tomb, this is nonetheless a valuable clue that archaeologists may have discovered a tomb with many non-trivial treasures and artifacts.
