It would no longer be a surprise if Amorim were to succeed Guardiola at Manchester City. |
According to Portuguese media, Amorim was one of the candidates to replace Pep Guardiola at Man City two years ago. A Bola revealed that with Hugo Viana currently serving as Sporting Director at Manchester City, the possibility of Amorim taking over as Manchester City's head coach is very likely.
This also explains why Amorim remained in Manchester and wasn't in a hurry to return to Portugal, despite having just been sacked by Manchester United. Viana and Amorim had a very close professional and personal relationship.
They were teammates at Braga. Later, when Viana became Director of Football at Sporting CP in 2018, he was the one who invited Amorim to become head coach in March 2020. To acquire Amorim from Braga, Viana convinced Sporting CP to pay a large release clause.
The seamless collaboration between the two brought tremendous success to Sporting CP. Sources describe Viana and Amorim as close friends, frequently meeting and socializing outside of work. Amorim even publicly praised Viana as someone "every coach should be lucky to work with."
Furthermore, the wives of both men are business partners in the interior design field, further strengthening their personal bond. With this solid relationship, it's no surprise that Viana favors Amorim in the search for Guardiola's successor at Manchester City.
