Established in 1998 under the name "Drawing Based on Books," the competition initially attracted 1,600 children who participated in individual drawing on A3 paper to encourage reading and visiting libraries. Over 28 years, Green Drawing has attracted hundreds of thousands of students from preschool to high school, including children from orphanages, shelters, and special schools.

The competition is constantly expanding, contributing to the development of critical thinking, fostering artistic talent, and helping students express themselves and create art. With enthusiastic participation from students, parents, and teachers, Green Drawing has become a familiar cultural activity, promoting the children's painting movement in Ho Chi Minh City.
This year, the competition had two formats: Computer-based painting (389 entries, 78 advanced to the final round); and In-person painting at local competition centers (30,000 contestants, 2,213 entries advanced to the final round, 729 students continued to the city-level final round).
In particular, besides the categories of painting on A3 paper, group painting on canvas, and computer painting, this year's Green Strokes competition includes a new category: short story writing through paintings (with 21 groups in the final round).

After three months of preliminary rounds held in 21 districts and Thu Duc City, the final round will take place on the morning of March 23rd at the General Science Library (District 1) and Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School. The closing ceremony and awards presentation will be held on April 27th, 2025.
