Recently, favorable weather conditions have resulted in a large and dense concentration of anchovies – one of the main species of the northern fishing season – appearing in the waters off Ha Tinh province, bringing great joy to fishermen, especially those operating in coastal and offshore fishing vessels.
Having just docked at Cua Sot fishing port (Loc Ha commune) with a successful fishing trip, Mr. Nguyen Tien Thang - a fisherman from Loc Ha commune - shared: “Taking advantage of the warm sunshine and calm seas, the fishermen continuously went out to sea to maintain their production rhythm. Our boat hit a school of anchovies, on good days we caught several tons, and on slow days we still got over 700 kg. The crew is also happy because their hard work has paid off.”

Not far away, after nearly a day at sea, encountering a school of anchovies, Mr. Ho Minh Huy's boat (from Dong Tien commune) caught over 700 kg of fish, earning over 15 million VND. Mr. Huy said: "This time, anchovies are abundant, and almost all fishermen who go out to sea have a good income. After selling to traders at the port, I quickly completed the procedures to continue heading out to sea."

According to information from the Management Board of Fishing Ports and Storm Shelters for Fishing Vessels in Ha Tinh Province, since the beginning of January, the catch of anchovies arriving at Cua Sot fishing port has increased significantly, reaching over 100 tons. This fish is entirely purchased by traders right at the dock, contributing to increased income for fishermen and providing a source of raw materials for the production and processing of fish sauce for businesses and cooperatives in the province.
In addition, fishermen in coastal communes and wards such as Dan Hai, Co Dam, Hai Ninh, etc., also received great joy as they returned from short fishing trips with holds full of anchovies. These fresh anchovies were quickly transported to the collection point, where traders bought them directly at stable prices of 12,000 - 15,000 VND/kg, creating a sense of excitement among the fishermen.

In addition, small fishing boats with a length of 6-12m, used by coastal fishermen, also catch many other types of seafood such as shrimp, crabs, scad, krill, mackerel, etc. At the central fishing port of Thach Lac commune, after returning from a fishing trip, fisherman Phan Van Thanh (Bac Lac village) was delighted to have harvested more than 400 kg of krill.
Mr. Thanh shared: “After a long period of rough seas, over a week ago, we returned to fishing. On days with thick fog in the early morning, followed by gentle sunshine, seafood resources are usually quite abundant, especially anchovies and krill. In addition, fishermen have now invested in fish finder equipment that measures frequency, so fishing is much easier than before.”

This time of year is often referred to by fishermen as the monsoon season, making venturing out to sea quite difficult. However, in return, the price of caught seafood is higher than at other times, with many fishing trips potentially bringing in several million dong per day. Shrimp, in particular, is being purchased right at the dock at prices ranging from 20,000 to 25,000 dong/kg for dried shrimp and 10,000 to 12,000 dong/kg for salted shrimp.

It is known that Thach Lac commune currently has a fleet of over 330 boats, mainly operating in nearshore fishing, providing regular employment for about 1,000 workers. This is an important force contributing to maintaining the rhythm of fisheries production, especially during peak periods at the end of the year.
Mr. Hoang Trong Duong, Head of the Economic Department of Thach Lac Commune People's Committee, said: "The local government always pays attention to and encourages fishermen to go out to sea to increase their income. In addition, the commune regularly disseminates information and advises people to monitor and update weather forecasts promptly, proactively during fishing, and ensure the safety of lives and property."

Not only coastal fishing vessels, but the province's large-capacity fleet of over 270 ships is also actively venturing out to sea, maintaining a presence in the vast fishing grounds around Co To Island (Quang Ninh), and the sea area from Da Nang to Quang Ngai,... These long fishing trips bring a stable income to fishermen, contributing to maintaining the regular presence of our country's fishing vessels in offshore waters.
Mr. Tran Van Tuan, a fisherman from Hai Ninh ward, said: “My boat has a 495 HP engine and we fish offshore, so each trip lasts about 15 days. Currently, the boat is preparing to dock in Da Nang. This time, we mainly caught grouper, snapper, and mackerel, with a yield of over 2 tons. Everyone on board is excited because the catch is quite good. After selling the fish and replenishing fuel and food supplies, we will continue to head out to sea for a new trip.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Trong Nhat, Deputy Head of the Fisheries Department of Ha Tinh province, current weather conditions are relatively favorable, creating conditions for fishermen to maintain fishing activities in the open sea in coastal, offshore, and deep-sea areas. The abundant aquatic resources during the northern fishing season include many species such as mackerel, snapper, anchovies, mollusks, grouper, scad, shrimp, krill, and red snapper, contributing to increased productivity and output, helping fishermen stabilize their income.
Along with creating favorable conditions for fishermen to exploit resources efficiently, the relevant agencies are also strengthening propaganda and guidance to ensure fishermen strictly comply with regulations on combating IUU fishing; promoting monitoring and management of reporting activities, controlling fishing vessels leaving and arriving at ports, and tracing the origin of harvested seafood through the eCDT system; and inspecting and strictly handling violations such as fishing in the wrong areas or using fishing methods not specified in the fishing license.
