From the center of Quang Tri ward, we traveled over 10km to Mr. Hieu's family farm. In contrast to the scorching sun outside, the air here was always cool and fresh thanks to the lush green of the fruit orchards. The farm, covering over 7,000m², is used by Mr. Hieu's family for integrated farming and livestock raising. Mr. Hieu shared that, compared to other farms, his farm isn't particularly impressive, but it's considered an achievement his family has built and accumulated over more than 40 years of living here.
Having lived in Tich Tuong village since childhood, having moved there with his parents to clear land, Hieu showed an early passion for farming. Therefore, after growing up, while most of his peers moved south to start businesses, he chose to stay and dedicate himself to this barren hillside. In the early days of his career, he invested in raising chickens on a large scale.
However, the subjective belief that "chickens are very familiar and easy to raise," coupled with inadequate farm size and an unclear source of breeding stock, quickly led to his failure. The losses were not only the entire 350 chickens and the debt for feed and medicine, but also the psychological trauma of the failure.

During his most difficult times, with the support of his family, Mr. Hieu was able to access preferential loans from the Social Policy Bank of Thanh Co. Mr. Hieu recalled: “The 5 million dong preferential loan in 2002 was like a lifeline for me. Thanks to that money, along with the support of my family, I was able to recover.” Starting a new batch of chickens, he thoroughly researched the origin of the chicks; meticulously renovated the coops; and diligently learned from experienced farmers.
Thanks to this, livestock farming has become more convenient. In particular, for nearly 10 years, Mr. Hieu has chosen to raise fighting chickens with 400 birds per batch, bringing high profits annually. Building on the success of this chicken farming model, he has expanded his livestock farming to the current number of 800 ducks per batch and dozens of sows and pigs for meat.
Alongside livestock farming, Mr. Hieu also utilizes his large plot of land to cultivate fruit trees. In addition to 30 longan saplings, there are approximately 30 lychee trees, 20 green pomelo trees, 30 red guava trees, and many other fruit trees such as mangoes, sapodillas, and jackfruit. According to Mr. Hieu, although the weather conditions in Quang Tri are relatively harsh, if planted and cared for properly, the trees still yield relatively high productivity. Over time, on the barren, desolate land, a lush, vibrant farm has gradually taken shape.
Mr. Hieu confided: “Here, it's not just my dedication, sweat, and tears that have contributed, but also timely support from preferential loan capital. Not only the initial 5 million VND, but later, I had access to many more preferential loan programs from the Social Policy Bank of Thanh Co, most recently 100 million VND from the job creation loan program. The long loan term and low interest rate mean we don't have to worry about paying monthly interest. Every penny of the borrowed capital is carefully managed and calculated to avoid wasting this valuable support.”
Starting from nothing, this integrated economic model now brings his family an income of over 300 million VND per year. Mr. Hieu said that if he could access more preferential loan programs, he plans to expand the scale of his livestock farming to develop his chicken and pig herds. He is also willing to share his experience with others who share the same passion and want to be involved in farming.
According to Le Hai Ha, Director of the Social Policy Bank of Thanh Co Ward, not only Mr. Hieu but also many other families in Quang Tri Ward have risen above their circumstances thanks to preferential loan capital. “Most families know how to use the loan capital effectively to overcome difficulties and develop their economy. Their efforts have contributed significantly to the local social welfare work, accelerating sustainable poverty reduction and building a more civilized, prosperous, and beautiful Quang Tri Ward,” affirmed Le Hai Ha, Director of the Social Policy Bank of Thanh Co Ward.
