Many users reacted negatively when Xiaomi adjusted the suggested retail prices of some Xiaomi and Redmi products. The company cited the reason as the continued sharp and unexpected increase in the price of key components, especially memory chips.
Three phone models are directly affected. The Redmi K90 Pro Max will see a price increase of 200 yuan ( US$29 ), while the Turbo 5 and Turbo 5 Max will no longer receive the Lunar New Year discount. The 512GB version, however, will continue to receive a 200 yuan subsidy.
"This memory price increase has truly exceeded expectations, with the price of the same memory version increasing nearly fourfold compared to the first quarter of last year. The 12GB RAM version with 512GB storage has increased by approximately 1,500 yuan ( US$217 )," Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi's Mobile Division and General Manager of the Xiaomi brand, stated on Weibo.
Lu Weibing said this has significantly impacted Redmi, which has always been known for its competitive pricing.
Wei Siqi, Xiaomi's Marketing Director in China, also confirmed that the company had tried to limit the impact of rising memory chip prices on product costs, but the current increase had exceeded its ability to absorb it. He said Xiaomi would try to limit the number of models affected by the price increase.
The cause of this price increase stems from the global memory chip crisis. The AI boom has led Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron to shift a large portion of their production capacity to HBM chips for AI servers, reducing the supply of conventional consumer memory chips. Consumer DRAM and NAND flash prices have surged since late 2025, directly impacting the production costs of most Android phones.
Xiaomi isn't the only company under this pressure. OPPO, Vivo, and Honor are also considering adjusting retail prices in the near future. This is the most widespread price increase for smartphones in the Chinese industry in years.
User reactions were quite mixed. Some argued that the price increase was justified given rising input costs, and appreciated Xiaomi's one-week advance notice, allowing users time to consider their options. Others argued that there was no need to rush into buying just because the price was about to increase, and that users should buy based on their actual needs.
