Following the merger, Tran Yen commune now has over 700 hectares of mulberry cultivation area. The local people are continuously improving the mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing processes, applying scientific advancements to production, and enhancing the productivity, yield, and quality of silkworm cocoons. Notably, Tran Yen commune has established numerous cooperatives and production groups to produce and market high-value products derived from mulberry trees and silkworms. This has contributed to increased income and brought more prosperous and happy Lunar New Year celebrations to the local people.

Vast fields of mulberry trees stretch across Tran Yen commune.

On the first day of spring, as the young shoots were stirring, awaiting the first rays of sunlight of the Year of the Horse, we arrived at Lan Dinh village, Tran Yen commune. This is one of the villages with the largest mulberry cultivation area in the commune. In the mulberry fields, the villagers chatted and laughed, while also taking the opportunity to replant in the empty spaces caused by the floods and heavy rains of the past year.

With many years of experience and having participated in technical training courses organized by the Farmers' Association of the commune, Mr. Ha, from Lan Dinh village, is one of the exemplary farmers in developing agricultural production models in the locality, especially in the movement "Farmers competing in excellent production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty".

Mr. Ha also consistently provides seedlings and technical support to help households develop mulberry cultivation. He also helped establish a cooperative with other households to process mulberry products such as mulberry wine, scarves, and silk socks, increasing the value of mulberry products and bringing higher income to the families.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ha excitedly said: "With 2 acres of mulberry trees and 11 silkworm rearing trays per batch, in 2025, my family will harvest nearly 2 tons of silkworm cocoons. With a selling price of 200-220 thousand VND/kg, we will earn over 400 million VND. Given the economic benefits of mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, in 2026, my family will focus on improving our farming practices to increase our income."

In the springtime, across the mulberry fields of Truc Dinh village, taking advantage of the favorable weather, the villagers are eagerly heading to the fields to cut and replant the remaining mulberry trees.

People in Tran Yen district are taking advantage of the opportunity to replant in the areas left empty by the floods in 2025.

Specifically, members of the Hanh Le Mulberry and Silkworm Cooperative, with 56 households linked in mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing (total mulberry area of 30 hectares), are actively replanting on their fields.

The mulberry trees that the cooperative introduced for planting are the S7 variety, imported from Lam Dong province. They have the advantage of quickly sprouting new shoots after pruning, strong trunks, and large leaves. After just over a month of care, the mulberry field is completely covered in green.

Currently, the Hanh Le Silkworm Cooperative raises about 500 trays of silkworms per batch and supplies young silkworms to people inside and outside the commune, bringing in a stable income of 700 million VND per household per year.

“To achieve high cocoon yields and good quality, in addition to applying scientific and technical methods to mulberry tree care, the cooperative also applies a high-tech silkworm house model with air conditioning and dehumidifiers to control temperature. Raising silkworms in this environment prevents diseases and allows for a longer rearing season, utilizing the mulberry leaves from June to July without having to cut them down and waste them,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Le, Director of Hanh Le Mulberry and Silkworm Cooperative.

Mulberry trees are well-suited to the climate and soil conditions of Tran Yen commune. As a result, mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing have expanded significantly over the years, creating valuable marketable products, providing stable income, and enriching the lives of local farmers. Currently, Tran Yen commune has 6 cooperatives and 79 cooperative groups operating in mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing; over 1,085 households involved in mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, 17 concentrated silkworm rearing facilities, and more than 1,000 households with large-scale silkworm farms, generating revenue exceeding 200 billion VND per year.

Even more encouraging, an automated silk reeling factory has been built in the commune on an area of 2 hectares, managed by Yen Bai Silk and Mulberry Joint Stock Company, with a capacity of 150 tons of silk per year. This factory promotes the development of a value chain in mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, consuming all silkworm cocoon products within the commune. This contributes to raising the average per capita income of the commune to over 67 million VND per year. By 2025, the commune is expected to reduce the number of poor households by 17, a decrease of 0.22% compared to 2024, bringing the poverty rate down to 0.5%.

Mr. Tran Quang Vinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Tran Yen commune, said: "Implementing the policy of restructuring the agricultural sector in conjunction with building new rural areas, Tran Yen has clearly defined the direction of developing concentrated, specialized commodity agriculture, linked to value chains and market demand. Mulberry trees have been identified as the main crop, and it is expected that by 2026, the commune will plant an additional 56 hectares."

To achieve this, the locality continues to coordinate with the agricultural sector to transfer technology to participating households applying the model of raising silkworms on sliding trays to save time and ensure hygiene in silkworm farms; at the same time, it encourages people to expand the area of mulberry cultivation associated with tourism development, strengthen production-consumption linkages, and build local product brands.

The leader of Tran Yen commune (wearing a striped shirt) introduces the reporter to the potential for developing experiential tourism at the mulberry field.

With stable cocoon prices and encouragement from the local government, including support in terms of seeds, capital, and technology, the people of Tran Yen have been actively renovating old mulberry plantations, expanding high-yield varieties such as S7, applying advanced care techniques, improving the quality and quantity of cocoons, and building a mulberry and silk brand associated with the development of OCOP products.

At the same time, developing experiential tourism will allow visitors to Tran Yen not only to enjoy picking strawberries, taking photos amidst the dreamy green strawberry fields in the cool, fresh air, and having interesting experiences from silkworm farms and silk spinning, but also to better understand the traditional weaving craft.

Visiting Tran Yen commune on the first day of 2026, everywhere you look are lush green mulberry fields, stretching endlessly, a color of abundance and prosperity. A new spring has arrived in the homeland; across the mulberry fields, young shoots are reaching out to welcome the warmth of the earth and sky, promising bountiful silkworm harvests and a prosperous and happy Tet holiday.
