(QBĐT) - Throughout its history, the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital has continuously strived and developed, becoming a reliable healthcare facility for the local population.
Years of hardship and heroism
Initially, the Quang Trach Clinic had to borrow a portion of the rehabilitation center for cadres from the South who had relocated to the North. In 1962, the Quang Trach Clinic was upgraded to the Quang Trach District Hospital.
During the war against the US, Quang Trach was one of the key targets of fierce enemy attacks. Dr. Vo Van Phu, former Director of Quang Trach District Hospital and former Director of the Department of Health, recalled: “On August 5, 1964, the enemy bombed the naval base at the mouth of the Gianh River, Roon Cape, and along the Gianh River. The enemy attacked relentlessly, causing casualties of over 100 people. The hospital only had 50 beds, and the number of staff was very limited. We organized emergency care at the hospital while also sending mobile teams to the ‘hot spots’ to provide on-site emergency care. Patients were brought in continuously; there weren’t enough stretchers inside, so we had to set up stretchers in the yard. We mobilized all our resources with urgency and determination to promptly treat patients and transfer those with serious conditions to the provincial hospital.”
Recalling an unforgettable memory, Mr. Vo Van Phu emotionally recounted: “Around 7 a.m. on June 14, 1965, a group of planes came up from the sea and flew over the hospital. Everyone was working, and no one paid attention. Suddenly, they turned back and dropped bombs all over the hospital area. At that time, many people were injured, including one nurse who died and one patient who passed away. The shelter for pregnant women was buried by the bombs. The militia came to dig a tunnel to rescue people, but the enemy attacked all day. Every time they dug for a while, the planes would come and drop bombs again, so they had to stop. It wasn't until the afternoon that they were able to bring out the pregnant women and their newborns, and luckily, they were all saved… It was a difficult, painful, but also very resilient time!”
After that bombing, the hospital had to be evacuated repeatedly, but the unit persevered, becoming a wartime medical facility that met the new mission requirements and performed exceptionally well.
With its significant contributions throughout history, Quang Trach District Hospital has been awarded many prestigious honors by the Party and State, such as: a Certificate of Merit from President Ho Chi Minh (1965); the title of "Heroic Hospital" for outstanding achievements in the anti-American resistance movement (1967); the Second Class Resistance Medal (1974); the Second Class Labor Medal (1968), Second Class (1975), Third Class (1978), and First Class (2006)... Many hospital staff members have also been awarded other prestigious medals and decorations.
By December 2006, the hospital was upgraded and renamed the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital. Currently, it has 23 departments and wards with 431 staff members and employees, including 97 doctors.
Broad general medicine, specialized medicine
The family of patient PVH in Quang Xuan commune (Quang Trach district) still cannot believe the "miracle" of their father. On February 6, 2025, Mr. H. fainted, then regained consciousness and was taken by his daughter to the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital for examination, where he suddenly suffered cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and maximally dilated pupils.
Ms. Pham Thi Be, Mr. H.'s daughter, shared: "At that time, the whole family thought there was no hope. The doctors quickly provided emergency care, and after 90 minutes of strenuous efforts, they announced that my father's heart had started beating again. The whole family was overwhelmed with happiness. We are very grateful to the doctors for their perseverance in finding every possible way to save my father's life."
"The patient was then transferred to the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi for further treatment, and his health has now stabilized," said Tran Thanh Tinh, Head of the Intensive Care and Toxicology Department at the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital.
This is just one of many difficult cases that the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital has successfully treated in recent years. The timely updating and supplementation of advanced specialized techniques, the improvement of skills, and the cultivation of medical ethics have contributed to enhancing the quality of emergency care and medical examination and treatment at the hospital. As a result, the hospital has gained the trust of many patients seeking medical care, and the rate of referrals to higher-level hospitals has decreased compared to before.
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Don Town, Nguyen Van Tinh, affirmed: "As the central medical facility in the northern part of the province, the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital has an increasingly high reputation in medical examination and treatment in Ba Don Town and neighboring districts. The leaders and people of the town deeply appreciate the generations of doctors and medical staff who have made great contributions to the care and protection of people's health. The locality will always stand alongside and create all conditions to build a more modern hospital, promote the development of specialized medical services, improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, and meet the increasingly high needs of the people."
According to Nguyen Viet Thai, Director of the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital, in the coming years, the hospital will be developed according to the model of "Broad General Hospital, Deep Specialized Hospital," focusing on specialties such as: emergency resuscitation, cardiology, interventional cardiology, interventional endoscopy, endoscopic surgery in various specialties, etc.; gradually completing departments and wards according to the standards of a Grade II hospital, striving to reach 33/33 departments and wards by 2030; and establishing a unit for on-demand medical examination and treatment.
At the same time, we will continuously improve and enhance quality, striving to achieve a 4/5 rating according to the Vietnamese hospital quality criteria by 2025, and an overall patient satisfaction rate of over 95%.
| In January 2024, the Northern Quang Binh Regional General Hospital Project (Facility 2), with a capacity of 1,000 beds and functional areas, commenced construction. This project aims to meet the healthcare needs of people in the northern Quang Binh and southern Ha Tinh regions while reducing the burden on tertiary hospitals. Phase 1, with 200 beds, is expected to be completed in December 2025. |
